SPC Final Results

St. John's Mavericks finished strong in Fort Worth, Keller, and Arlington for the 2019 SPC Winter Championships. Girls' Soccer won their first title, while Wrestling won a sixth and Girls' Swimming & Diving took their second consecutive championship.




St. John’s Mavericks Boys’ Soccer and Girls’ Basketball put up solid performances in Thursday’s opening rounds spread out across Tarrant County.  In Arlington, Boys’ Soccer survived an early surge by Oakridge but two head balls by Jack Trent ’19 made it 2-0 before the Owls scored late.  Trent also was fouled inside the penalty box which set up the third score pk by Ryan Doughty ’20.

“I’ve only been on this team for two years,” said Trent. “I’m so happy to be with these guys. These guys are my brothers. It’s so special to be with everyone and get to know them. Just credit everybody doing their job and I just happened to put it in the net.”

Boys’ Soccer lost their second-round game 2-0 to Casady and lost 3-1 to Greenhill for sixth place.

Girls’ Basketball also defeated Oakridge on Thursday, hosted by Trinity Valley School.  Eliza Holt ’20 led the Mavericks with 13 points in the 41-24 win.  On Friday, Holt added 15 in their 40-30 quarterfinal victory over FWCD for a spot in the championship semi-finals against Kinkaid. While the Mavericks lost to the Falcons, this was their best showing in years. St. John's finished the tournament with a 

“This win means a lot,” said center Gabby Long ’19.  “We worked really hard this season.  The past couple of years we have gotten knocked out of this round (championship quarterfinals).  This is a chance to get to the championship.”

St. John's lost to Houston Christian 39-24 for 4th place.

Boys’ Basketball lost their first game 53-45 to Cistercian, but bounced back with a 41-39 victory over St. Andrew’s to land them in the consolation finals against Casady.  Charlie McGee ’20 led the Mavs with 11 points. They lost to Casady 56-35 for 10th place.
 
“We made sure to come out strong today and get a win for the team,” said Isaac Blue ’20, on their Friday victory. 

Girls’ Soccer was in winning company on SPC Saturday as they defeated North Zone #1 seed Hockaday in the SPC Championship game.  Maverick Wrestling won their sixth title in the last seven seasons, while SJS Girls’ Swimming & Diving followed suit with a second consecutive title on a 62.5 point margin of victory.  Boys' Swimming & Diving finished runner up.
