Cool Runnings at the Ramble

Maverick Girls' and Boys' Cross Country teams were ready to go at the 39th running of the St. John's Ramble. This year's race was held for the first time at Spring Creek Park in Tomball, the site of the 2019 SPC championships. The temperatures at the early start times were in the 50's.
"It was on Buffalo Bayou forever and then we went to T.C. Jester Park," said Boys' Head Coach Richie Mercado '79.  "This year we decided to have it at Spring Creek Park because SPC will be held there."

With SPC being held on the same course on November 9, more out of town SPC teams such as Greenhill, St. Andrew's and St. Mark's showed up for an SPC sneak preview. The Lions had the top two seed marks for the boys' varsity division, while Greenhill posted seven of the top 14 seed marks in the girls' varsity division.

True to the seedings in the boys’ varsity race, St. Mark’s finished one-two with an overall score of 43 points for first.  Antonio was second, followed by St. John’s just one point out in third place. The Mavericks' top five runners were Emmanuel Sgouros (4th), Davis Thames (6th), Douglas Parsley (10th), Kyle Puckett (17th), and Pierce Ederly (19th).

As projected in the girls' varsity division, Greenhill Girls’ finished first overall with 37 points.  St. John’s finished fourth with 83. The top five runners for the Mavericks girls varsity were Cici Calhoun (8th), Catie Beck (12th), Nora Doughty (17th), Natalie Boquist (25th), and Rebecca Bollich (27th).

Next up is the South Zone SPC Championship meet held at St. Andrew’s School of Austin on October 26.
