Field Hockey 2019 SPC Champs!

Field Hockey defeated ESD 8-0 in the quarterfinals and followed it up with an 8-0 win over Casady to advance to the SPC Championship game against Kinkaid. In the last game of the regular season, St. John's dominated the Falcons 3-1, but in the championship game, it was a battle for the ages. The game was scoreless in regulation and two overtime periods, forcing a 1v1 shootout with the Mavericks finally prevailing.

After time expired in the second overtime the game went to a 1v1 shootout. Sadie McCabe '20 started the scoring for a 1-0 lead. Kennedy Sholeen '20 and Sloan Davidson '22 added two more and goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy '21 shut down the Falcons for a 3-0 win and a second consecutive SPC title.

St. John’s Field Hockey won back-to-back field hockey championships in 2015 and 2016. With the win on Saturday, they did it again and like last season they were undefeated in league play. In the last two SPC finals, the Mavericks prevailed over Kinkaid (2018 & 2019).  In 2018 the Mavericks won 3-0 in regulation time of 60 minutes. On Saturday I would take 85 minutes to finally finish off a tough Falcon team.

“That was a tough game,” said Head Coach Craig Chambers ’81. “You got to hand it to Kinkaid.  Both teams slugged it out. It took a lot of grit to be out there that long.

“It was so stressful,” said Kennedy about being in the goal for the shootout.  “It was great that we made ours. We work on this in practice every day.”

Sloan Davidson ’22 almost scored the game-winner in the second overtime.  Her shot ricocheted off the goal post and was cleared by the Kinkaid defense.  After Sholeen scored the second 1v1 goal for St. John’s, Davidson made good on her next chance to put the game away, as Kinkaid was out of equalizers.

“It was a hard fight and battle, and we worked hard this season,” said Davidson.

Fans from both teams and other schools were lined on the west side of the field to see two teams play their hearts out. McCabe, who finally got the Mavericks on the board with the first 1v1 goal, had this to say about playing in the SPC tournament.

“I like that even though we are competing against each other, there is a bond between schools. All the Kinkaid players were really nice to us afterward, and meeting new people from the North Zone creates a bond across cities.”
