Cross Country Sweeps Houston Prep Championships

The Mavericks finished the season in winning fashion at the 2020 Houston Area Prep School Cross Country Championships held on Saturday, November 7 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.  The boys and girls won the varsity races and the JV boys had a perfect score! Boys won handily over Cooper and the girls pulled an upset by one point over EHS.  Complete results are HERE.

Emmanuel Sgouros ’22
led all runners with a PR of 15:44.  While the season was shortened, Sgouros won all of his five races and saved the best for the finale, and good enough to be selected as the Chronicle Boys Athlete of the Week.

“We were confident and came out and performed today,” said Sgouros, who helped pace a team victory for the Mavericks.

St.  John’s Boys Varsity finished first with 36 points. John Cooper School was second with 75 points. The Mavericks' depth was on display with Sgouros (1st), Josh Schwartz ’21 (3rd), Pierce Ederle ’21 (5th), Wilson Bailey ’23 (13th), and Bo Farnell ’22 (14th) combining for a convincing win.  William Thames ’23, St. John’s 6th-place finisher, was in 15th.

The Boys JV put the first six runners across the finish line for a perfect score of 15 points.  George Donnelly ’23 led the pack with a PR of 18:35.4.

The Maverick Girls’ also won as a team, but it could not have been any closer.  They edged out favorite EHS 44 to 45.  Sarah Clark ’22 finished 3rd followed by CiCi Calhoun ‘22 (4th), Nora Doughty ’23 (8th), Rebecca Bollich ’22 (14th), and Natalie Boquist ’23 (15th), just two second ahead of the 16th place runner from EHS.

“It’s super exciting,” said Head Coach Rachel Fabre. “I knew we were close, and we had many PR’s today which is very hard to accomplish at the end of the season.”

The girls team will have everyone back next season. The boys team graduates seniors Schwartz, Ederle, Henry Miller ’21, Ben Dokupil ’21, and Alex Konar ’21, but not Sgouros!
