The St. John’s Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team began match play for the 2021 tennis season yesterday with a sweep over Emery Weiner. After a season cut short last year due to covid, the team picked up where it left off by defeating Emery Weiner 4-0 at the Lee LeClear Tennis Center. Charlotte Papeians took care of business in defeating her opponent 8-0 while playing line 1 singles. Isabella O’Reilly (captain) stayed focused in her 8-1 victory at line 2 singles. After a jittery start, Hannah Chang (captain) and Ava Phan won a hard fought match 9-8 (10-6) playing line 1 doubles against a formidable doubles team of Misha Berry and Abby Cowan. Playing line 2 doubles, Dalia Khera and Natasha Janssens made easy work of their 8-0 win without dropping a game. The team will get to savor this victory for only a few days as it gets ready to play a double header against two schools from Austin, St. Andrews School and St. Stephens, later this week.
