Maverick Field Hockey Ready for SPC Counters

The out-of-state competitions have been a measuring ground for the program, and an invaluable means of team development. Since 2016, the Mavs traveled to Missouri for three consecutive seasons to take on top teams in the Midwest and have a 9-2-2 record to show for it. In 2019 St. John attended the inaugural Max Field Hockey event going 1-2. This past weekend St. John’s finished 2-1 by defeating Sacred Heart Greenwich (CT) 3-2 in OT, blasting Ballard (KY) 5-1 and dropping their last game to Norfolk Academy (VA) 4-2.  Wins and losses aside, these trips enhance team chemistry and level of play.

 

“It’s a great team bonding experience to travel and be together,” said first-year head coach Becky Elliott. “We play three games in a short amount of time. We get to see different teams, and it’s a lot of fun!”

“It’s super fast-paced with high intensity and it really helped our team grow together on and off the field,” said captain Sloan Davidson ’22 who was selected as All-Tournament First Team alongside teammate Kristina Johnson ’24 (All-Tournament Additional Top Performer accolades). 

 

“The PA trip is a really great way for our team to put what we have been doing in practice into gameplay and compete against some of the top high school teams in the country,” said captain Megan Wetzel ’22. “This competition gives us great preparation for the SPC counter games.”

The Mavericks defeated Awty for their first conference win of the season prior to going to Philadelphia. The team rolls into the heart of the conference schedule starting with Houston Christian, followed by  EHS, St. Stephen’s, St. Andrew’s, and Duchesne. The final regular-season game is against Kinkaid, who previously handed the Mavs a non-counter 3-0 loss. 

“We are at the midway point where we really kick off the counters,” said Elliott. 

The SPC tournament starts on November 4 in Dallas. With their strong team chemistry and competitive preparation, St. John’s will look no further than one counter at a time.
