Boys' Volleyball Starts SPC with Win
Boys Varsity Volleyball started off the SPC tournament with a 3-0 win over St. Andrew’s School of Austin, one of two teams from the SPC South they defeated twice in the regular season. The Mavericks won the first game 25-8 in quick fashion and followed up with 25-18, and 25-21 victories propelling them to the quarterfinals against Trinity Valley.
“I’m excited we played really well today and well enough considering it is a team we just beat last week,” said Head Coach Chaz Hulett. “I think we did not take them for granted and I’m looking forward to tomorrow and we will need to continue to play our best as there are well-matched teams throughout the tournament and league. No off periods allowed.”
In the regular season, the Mavs looked to run the tables in the six-team SPC South by starting out 5-0, but the second time around against Episcopal, Awty, and Kinkaid ended in three losses. They seem to have taken the brakes off in their last two games against St. Andrew’s and St. Stephen’s, and have an opening tournament win to show for it.
“We had a great season so far and we want to elevate our play here at SPC and continue playing like we are right now and have fun,” said captain Matt Chotiner ’22, who had seven aces on the day.
Alex Aitken ’22 also factored in the win hitting .398 from the outside.
“It works out when you are aggressive and not getting nervous in the moment, and tonight I did not want to be shy,” said Aitken.
“Teamwork is a big thing for us,” said captain Brad Raizner ’22. “We are always helping each other, always lifting each other up when we make mistakes. It should be fun tomorrow.”
Hulett echoes the amount of fun he sees this entire roster having this season, where players get along with each other and veterans welcome the newer players into the fold and they really play well together.
“It's been fun to watch this team,” said Hulett. “They really grew up and became much better. It’s been a fun year.”
For the Mavericks to have a chance to keep it going, they need to get by North #2 seed Trinity Valley who handed the Mavericks a 3-2 loss back in August. Fun elevated play with plenty of teamwork might be enough to make it happen.
