St. John’s Head Wrestling Coach Alan Paul and his long-time assistant Danny Henderson reached the 200-win mark in dual wrestling competitions by defeating Kinkaid at the inaugural Houston Private School Duals. Up next is the Texas State Prep Duals hosted by St. John's on Saturday.
St. John’s Head Wrestling Coach Alan Paul and his long-time assistant Danny Henderson reached the 200-win mark in dual wrestling competitions by defeating Kinkaid at the inaugural Houston Private School Duals. The Mavericks put up 252 total points to their opponents’ 65 by also defeating Bay Area Christian, Episcopal, and St. Thomas for the title.
“We learned of each other’s interest in the sport and began our partnership in coaching at St. John’s,” said Paul, who was a high school wrestler.
“Alan and I became friends through coaching together,” said Henderson, a former collegiate wrestling official. “He is such an inspiration. Our motto is ‘work made fun gets done.’”
Paul and Henderson coached their first dual win in 2006 and have been on a roll ever since. St. John’s has won five out of the last six SPC championships. They also won the Prep State title in 2017 to go along with their 2016 Big Horn Duals win. Over 50 All-State and All-SPC wrestlers have been under their tutelage. The coaching duo is always seeking the next move, either for a particular match or for what is yet to be conquered in the sport.
The wins and accolades take care of themselves. It’s the culture of the program that is the life force for Maverick Wrestling.
“It’s unique that a pair of coaches has won 200 duals together,” said Paul. “Yet it’s more about our program and the consistency of coaching we have built and sustained over time. It’s Danny and I and all of the coaches and wrestlers working together. Every year we get better.”
“Our program is more like a community,” said Henderson. “When you have parents from past years show up at a match that is telling.”
Like a traveling show, they roll out the mats, take down the mats and slog to the next event. With their dual win count up to 203, they have a chance to increase that number this Saturday and they will not have to go far to do it. St. John’s hosts the Texas State Prep Duals. The Mavericks have been runner up in the past three years, but have never won it. Bishop Lynch, Liberty Christian, McKinney Christian, St. Thomas and other teams will be in a tangle for the title, but if St. John’s get’s the work done, it could be a ton of fun.
