SPC South Zone Champs: Maverick Swimming Speed Up on Senior Day

Congratulations to the Girls and Boys Varsity Swimming teams for winning the 2022 SPC South Zone meet held at the University of Houston Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. The Mavericks Girls and Boys started off strong with first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relays, setting the tone for a great day in the water and a celebration for the seniors on the team.
St. John’s was favored on paper with the best overall seed times but had to prove it in the pool winning both the girls' division (127 pts) and boys' division (154 pts) by significant margins.

“You don’t win meets on seed times, you win meets by what’s in the water,” said Head Coach Ron Raper.

In an SPC South senior ceremony midway through the morning, St. John’s recognized a dozen teammates- Maria Cheng, Ella Flowers, Maggie Miller, Maddie Mossman, Katie Wasserman, Hannah Woodhouse, Manager Ella Chen, Todd Achuff, Ryan Guthrie, Bryce Pollock, Michael Skaribas, and James Wang. Achuff (16 pts) and Flowers (18 pts) were top individual scorers for each team.

“It feels great to know I’ve been able to be a leader and good role model,” said Todd Achuff ’22.

“Senior day is super exciting and everyone is ready to swim fast, do well and have our seniors recognized,” said Ella Flowers  ’22.

“It’s exciting to have the recognition in our second to the last meet of the season and I love swimming here,” said Bryce Pollock ’22.

Every year I've seen guys before me be recognized,” said Michael Skaribas '22. “I just didn't think it would happen this fast but it's really nice.”

While the seniors stole the spotlight, underclassmen were also a factor. Alex Miao ’24 equaled Achuff's team-high 16 individual points with three meet-record wins in the 200-yard medley (butterfly), 200-yard free, and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Katie Czelusta ’25 scored 10 points and was part of two winning relays.

“It’s a pretty good feeling today,” said Miao. “I had a good night's sleep, and this is the best pool I have raced in for a swim meet.”

Up next for the South Zone champs is the 2022 SPC Championships at the Arlington ISD Natatorium on February 11. For the seniors, this is their last time in the water for the Mavericks, and projected by seed times, it could go fast.
