Boys' Cross Country retreat to Montana bodes well for Lone Star State competition.

The Boys Cross Country team traveled to Bozeman, Montana, in late July for their pre-season retreat. Higher altitudes near 5000 feet and lower temperatures in the 60s were a perfect blend for training. Upon their return, the Mavs took third place at the Greenhill 6-mile relay on August 29 at Norbuck Park. The Mavericks only trailed 6A Keller HS in the final standings and earned a third-place finish out of 74 teams. The race format is a 6-mile relay with each of the four runners completing a 1.5-mile loop over hay bales and up a steep hill. The baton is a garden glove, a tradition in the 41 years of the competition. The Mavs will return to Norbuck Park on November 7 for the SPC championship race. The St. John’s Boys won SPC 4A the past two years.

Skip Lee Field & McMurrey Track Rededication on Friday, August 28, 2026

St. John's School is rededicating the newly constructed Skip Lee Field and the Frank McMurrey Memorial Track on Friday, August 28, during the first Varsity Football home game of the season. Please join Headmaster Dan Alig to honor two legends of St. John’s by celebrating these new facilities named in their honor, which will serve the school for years to come.

Baizan Leads in Points as USWNT U-18 Field Hockey Win World Hockey Youth Festival

Early this year, Valentina Baizan ’27 was named to the U-18 Field Hockey USWNT. She was selected to the touring team and just finished playing for USA in the World Hockey Youth Festival in the Netherlands (August 17-23). Baizan finished the tour as joint top scorer and led the team in total points (4 goals and 2 assists). The U-18 USA Women’s National Team placed 1st at the festival.

Cheer Ready to Rock from Summer Camp in Austin

Cheer started the summer with a team camp at the University of Texas. They were more than ready to cheer on the Varsity Football team last night for the first game of the season. The Mavericks prevailed 42-41 over Woodlands Christian. See below for the cheer recap and final results from Austin.

Yen Wins Humanitarian Award

Congratulations to Ashley Yen '22 for winning the Molly Meyer Humanitarian Award for Yale this spring. The award is "presented annually to male and female senior student-athletes whose character exemplifies selfless devotion along with compassion and concern for their team and the community at Yale and beyond.”

Yen captained the Yale Varsity Golf team this past spring and played all four years for the Bulldogs. She is a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar, and she made the 2025-26 Ivy League Women's Golf Academic All-Ivy team.

Spring SPC in HTX

Girls and Boys Lacrosse led off the 2026 spring season SPC championships in Greater Houston, on April 17-18. finishing 3rd and 4th place respectively. Boys Golf competed on April 21-22 for 5th place. Girls Golf finished their championship on April 29, finishing as SPC Runners-Up. Boys Tennis won a consecutive SPC Championship. Girls Tennis finished third. Softball finished as Runners-Up and Baseball finished third. Track and Field Girls and Boys both finished in fourth place.

Congratulations to Girls Golf, Girls Lacrosse, and Boys Lacrosse for winning HJPC. Girls Golf posted a team score of 325, winning by 32 points. Girls Lacrosse defeated St. Francis 10-6, and Boys Lacrosse defeated Kinkaid 12-4 in their respective championship games.

St. John’s Announces Greg Cook ’06 as Head Coach for Boys Cross Country and Track & Field

St. John’s is proud to welcome back Greg Cook (Class of 2006) as our new Head Coach for Boys Cross Country and Head Coach for Track & Field.

A standout student-athlete during his time at St. John’s, Cook served as team captain for both Soccer and Track & Field. He continued his athletic career at Rhodes College, graduating in 2010 as a 12-time All-Conference honoree across the 400m, triple jump, javelin, and 4x400m relay.

Cook’s coaching journey began back at St. John’s in 2011, where he assisted with the long jump and triple jump. He later moved to Austin and spent five successful years as an assistant coach at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, contributing to both Cross Country and Track & Field programs. Most recently, Cook has served as Head Cross Country Coach at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School while also supporting Track & Field across sprints, jumps, throws, and distance events.
