St. John's Girls and Boys Cross Country made the grade against top runners this past weekend at the Hoka McNeil Invitational (TX), and the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational (KY), respectively. See MileSplit TX for more on the Mavs.
St. John’s Boys Cross Country traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, for this Saturday’s running of the Trinity-Valkyrie Invitational, the oldest running event in the state, going back six decades. The Mavericks ran in the Championship Division against 41 other teams and in the Freshman/Sophomore race. For race results, please click here.
Varsity Field Hockey’s 2025 schedule is as tough as it gets. Their next eight games are against Max Field Hockey regionally and nationally ranked teams. The stretch of games includes two out-of-state road trips and SPC games. This weekend, the Mavericks travel to Chicago to play New Trier HS (IL) (#12 nation, #3 WMW region), Pioneer HS (MI) (#5 WMW region), and Loyola Academy (IL) (OC WMW region). The Mavericks return to Houston to play Kinkaid (#10 nation, #2 WMW region) on September 11. The next week, they fly to Pennsylvania for three games at the Max Field Hockey National tournament. Episcopal (OC WMW region) hosts on September 25.
Congratulations to the St. John's Girls' Athletic program for winning the SPC Directors Cup for the third consecutive year. The Boys finished in fourth place. The Directors Cup began in 2009 and is calculated from the combined standings in SPC sports for the 2024-2025 fall, winter, and spring seasons. St. John’s has won seven coed Directors Cups, eight Girls titles, and one in the Boys division.
Spring SPC finished up in Greater Houston this past weekend. Boys Tennis won their first SPC title since 1994. Girls Tennis, Softball, and Girls Track & Field all finished Runners-Up. Baseball ended up in third, and Boys Track & Field placed fourth. Earlier, Boys and Girls Lacrosse finished third and fourth, respectively. Girls Golf took third, and Boys Golf landed in fourth.
St. John’s Mavericks represent multiple levels of USA Field Hockey. Gracey Crawford ’26 competed for USA Field Hockey U-18 team in Tonbridge, England, April 18-21. USA 18’s finished the tour with a 2-2 record against Czechia, England, Scotland, and Poland. Valentina Baizan ’27 was named to the USA U-16 team. Juliana Boon ’24 was selected for the U-21 team, and former Olympian Kelsey Bing ’16 is on the USA Women’s National Team.
Maverick Lacrosse started SPC tournament play on Friday, April 11, in Dallas. The Girls won their quarterfinal game over St. Andrew's and then lost to ESD and Kinkaid to finish fourth. The Boys lost to St. Mark's in the semifinals and defeated Kinkaid for third place.
The Girls' Golf team will play on April 22-23, and the Boys' team will follow up on April 29-30, both at the Golf Club of Houston.
The rest of the Maverick spring teams will be in Houston from May 1 to May 3. Track & Field begins on May 2.
St. John's welcomes back Katina Christensen '21 on Friday, March 21 for one of two NCAA D1 lacrosse games played in Houston. Christensen, a senior captain for Dartmouth, has scored over 100 goals in her career and hopes to tally a few more on Caven Field for the weekend opener against Arizona State. Dartmouth also plays Sunday against the University of Colorado at the University of Houston.

Varsity teams compete in the Southwest Preparatory Conference Tournament at the end of each season. The SPC is comprised of 19 accredited independent schools. St. John's is one of three co-educational schools to participate in all 23 SPC sports, and is the current Directors' Cup holder holder as the top overall athletic program.

When applicable, St. John's Sports Medicine staff provides injury prevention education, pre- and post-operative rehabilitation, and daily sports medical care. The St. John's athletic training room houses state-of-the-art modalities, equipment, and instrumentation. SJS employs healthcare providers certified and licensed to provide athletic training care and most maintain additional advanced certifications/licenses.
