Virgil Campbell is in his 8th season as a member of the St John’s coaching staff. In 2011, Coach Campbell was named the first Director of Strength and Conditioning in the school’s history. He is credited with the dramatic improvement in both performance and conditioning of St. John’s student athletes during his tenure.
Campbell, who holds 15 years of experience in the field, came to St. John’s after serving as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the WNBA Champion Houston Comets. Prior to his prodigious success with the Comets, Coach Campbell functioned for 8 years as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for both the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers.
A paradigm of the “student athlete,” Coach Campbell earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry from Texas Southern University, while simultaneously distinguishing himself as a standout linebacker and track athlete for the Tigers. Following his prominent career at TSU, Campbell followed his passion for Strength and Conditioning to the University of Colorado, University of Houston, and to San Jose State University, where he pursued his Master’s in Exercise Physiology.
Coach Campbell holds two certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and a Tactical Strength and Conditioning Specialist (TSAC). Additionally, he is recognized as a National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist and is certified through USA Weightlifting as a Sports Performance and Advanced Sports Performance Coach. He also is a member of the Greater High School Strength Coach’s Association and serves on the board. Coach Campbell combines his vast experience with an active pursuit of education in Strength and Conditioning to provide St. John’s student athletes with elite instruction and coaching.
