Maverick FH Comes Out on Top in OT Victory

Mavericks versus Falcons field hockey: the match up never fails to be an emotional, roller-coaster ride against two talented and congenial adversaries, and tonight's game was no different.  On a less than ideal playing surface, the two teams went at each other with everything they had for just over 62 minutes of dramatic play with the conference "W" on the line.  The crowds on both sides were enthused and vocal and the players put on a non-stop performance. There were several nail-biter moments during regulation in which potential goals and dramatic saves enhanced the intensity of the rivalry.  The Maverick defense held firm throughout, keeping their cool under pressure from the Falcon attack.  On counter-attack, the Mav midfield adjusted to the slower conditions, mounting several counter opportunities in which the attack was close but denied by the Falcon defense.  After 60" of regulation, play remained tied, so it was on to 7v7 sudden victory, a common recurring theme in this always close competition against these hard-working teams.  From the OT start whistle, the Mavericks re-mustered their energy and will, and with 2 minutes lapsed, gained possession and quickly moved the ball in the midfield from left to right and then into and behind the Falcon defense.  With a 1v1 opportunity on goal, the Falcon goalie was able to deny an initial attempt at goal, but second effort on the rebound saw the ball across the goal line and the game ended with a huge Maverick victory.  Throughout the night, second efforts and poised, smart play were a hallmark of the Mavericks efforts.  Congratulations on an exciting win !  Tomorrow, the team takes on a less-seasoned opponent as they face off against the Dads and then it's the final "counter" against ESD this Sunday at 5:00 in an Ike make-up.  Thanks to all the fans for coming out and for the spirited and vocal support.
