Mavericks Take on Strong Strake Jesuit Crusaders at Lee LeClear in Massive Test

Harold Graham
On Tuesday, March 28, the 15 Maverick Boys traveled to Lee LeClear Tennis Center to take on a powerhouse contingent from Strake Jesuit.

It was a sunny, windy day. First up on the schedule would be 10 lines of singles to be followed by 5 lines of doubles.

Singles

Lines 1 and 2 featured Freshmen Andrew Sall and Mark Trautner, on loan from the Varsity.

At 1, Mr. Sall (2020) faced Jesuit's Mr. Hightower, a frequent foe from competitions and trainings beyond the school team season. The two battled it out, taking it to a tie breaker, which Andrew took with a 7-2 score.

At the #2 Line, Mr. Trautner (2020) played Mr. Nino. They, too, went to a tie breaker. However, the breaker did not go our way, as it came down to the last point and a 5-7 decision in favor of the Crusader.

Naveen Krishnan (2019) was paired against Mr. Dans at Line 3. Notable takeaways from Mr. Krishnan's match was greater efficiency on his serve, a willingness to take the net at the appropriate time, and patience, patience, patience to stay in the point. The result of an 8-5 win for our sophomore speaks for itself.

Line 4 featured another of our 10th graders, Raunak Kundagrami (2019), pitted against Mr. Nguyen. Another tight battle on Court 4, with long points, lots of running, unbelievable gets. This one went to the limit with the victory going to Jesuit's Nguyen 5-7 in the tie breaker. As with this format of no ad one set tennis, one point here or there can make the difference and, on this Tuesday afternoon, it did.

Making his season debut in Singles at Line 5 after getting over an injury and back to 100%, Nicholas Echeverri (2019) gamely battled Mr. Torres dropping his match by one service break 6-8. One could see Nicholas' confidence build as the set went on, with his serve, especially the second, gaining more bite while his second serve drove up and off of the court.

At Line 6, Will Heilmann (2020) took on Mr. Ngo, an opponent who proved too tough, keeping Will guessing and on the back foot, prevailing 3-8. This match took on the classic take of consistency in tough condidtions being a winning formula. Patience and balls in play take a mindset of perseverance, which we all see as works in progress.

Kenji Chevray (2019) was our Line 7, taking on Mr. Daniels in another close battle which was decided by one break of serve with Strake taking the match at 6-8.  Kenji's match was highlighted by good hustle and some of the works in progress we are tending to in our practices (better serve percentages & return of serve) coming to the fore.

Thomas Goodgame (2020) made his Singles debut against Strake's Mr. Kim at #8. Thomas' big shot making and aggressiveness moving forward were blunted by Kim's counterpunching style. And, on this day, the counterpuncher held the upper hand , gaining a 4-8 decision. Thomas's style of play of moving forward to the net, initiating the action takes more time than that of a grinder to develop and Mr. Goodgame is moving well along this path.

Another debutante in singles, Julian Westerfield (2020) took on Mr. Lacouter in a match out on Court 9. The Line 9 pairing was a tough one for Julian, who left it all on the court against a worthy adversary. Consistency  and the willingness to grind it out was the difference on this day which made each player ask himself what was the risk versus reward formula which would work the best.

And at #10, Brinkley Morse (2020) made his first singles match a memorable one by out hustling and outlasting Strake Jesuit's Burt by an 8-3 scoreline. Brinkley ran a lot of shots down, served well when he needed to, and extended the points.

At the end of the Singles, Strake held a 7 -3 match lead. Next up, Doubles.

Doubles

At Line 1, the two freshman on loan, Andrew Sall (2020) and Mark Trautner (2020) paired up against theur singles opponents in a shortened format 4-6.

Line 2 featured Ryan Chang (2019) and Raunak Kundagrami (2019) against Dans/Nguyen. The boys were game but the long singles match for Raunak with a quick turnaround left little in the tank for him. Game as they might have been, the Crusader duo were too much and went on to win 4-8.

Mr. Heilmann (2020) and Mr. Moll (2020) had an uncharacteristic result, dropping their line (#3) 2-8 against Ngo/Torres. There is not much that can be said other than every now and then one of these kind of matches pop up.

At Line 4, Vivek Kapur (2019) and Andy Tockman (2019) reversed the trend by taking their match 8-6 against Daniels/Kim. The blending of consistency (Tockman) and finishing (Kapur) worked again on the doubles court, showing the way.

At Line 5, William Urdahl (2020) and Julian Westerfield (2020) played Strake's Burt/Lacouter, dropping the decision 4-8. Consistency and staying in points are the things we will continue to concentrate on.

In the Doubles, SJS one win to Strake Jesuit's four.

Match Thoughts

Each year, Strake Jesuit has been our biggest challenge and this year was no different.

Our matches were closer with our tow Varsity players on loan in Andrew Sall and Mark Trautner. The rest of the squad had better results this year than we have had in the previous 5 years.

We have three weeks left in our season and five matches on the calendar as well as a team doubles tournament.

We will take to the courts and redouble our efforts as we drive through to the season's finish.

Next match, a rematch with Westbury Christian on Monday, April 3 at Lee LeClear.

Until then, great day and go Mavericks!
