Mavericks Win Two SPC Titles at Winter SPC
On Friday, Boys Swimming & Diving won their second SPC title scoring 109 points while besting runner-up Kinkaid by over 30 points. The Girls' team finished with 77 points for second place just one point ahead of St. Andrew's. Saturday's highlights featured early morning wins by Boys Soccer over St. Andrew's and Girls Basketball over Trinity Valley. In the afternoon, Boys Basketball also finished with a solid win over St. Mark's for 3rd place. Wrestling won their 8th SPC title with a score of 245.5 and more than 50 points ahead of runner-up EHS. Girls Soccer was in the title game for the 4th consecutive winter SPC. The Mavericks scored first but Hockaday answered and took advantage of a strong north wind in the second half pulling away with a 2-1 win as St. John's finished SPC Runners-Up.

BOYS SWIMMING
Boys’ Swimming and Diving scored 109 points for their second overall title after winning the first one in 2018. Kinkaid finished second with 77 points. The Mavericks were led by Todd Achuff ’22 with 13 points and Alex Miao ’24 who scored 12 individual points (first place 200 free). They were both in the 200-yard medley relay along with Ryan Guthrie ’22 (8 pts) and Nick Hensel ’24. The Mavericks only won two events but placed high enough in the rest of the races to win the team score even without any divers in the meet.
"There is no defense in swimming,” said Head Coach Ron Raper. “You can still win meets even if you don't take many first places in the meet if you have quality swimmers placing close to first place. This is called team depth.”
The Mavericks also broke a school record in the 200 Freestyle Relay in a time of 1:30.32 (Ryan Guthrie, Warren Kozak, Jeremiah Broughton, and Michael Skaribas). The old record was from the 2021 South Zone SPC Championship, Feb. 6, 2021: 1:30.40 (John Perdue, Micheal Skaribas, Nick Hensel, and Alex Miao).
GIRLS SWIMMING
The Girl's team broke two school records finishing runners-up, one point ahead of St. Andrew’s. Ella Flowers '22 broke her previous records in the 200 IM (2:03.46) and in the 100 backstroke (55.79). Going into the final event in the girl's meet, St. John’s was in fourth place needing to finish in the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay ahead of Kinkaid, John Cooper, and St. Andrew's. The Mavs accomplished that feat by finishing second ahead of Kinkaid (3rd), John Cooper (5th), and St. Andrew's (8th).
