As reigning SPC champions, the St. John’s Girls Varsity Tennis Team opened the 2023 tennis season in impressive fashion at the recent Chancellors Tournament held at the Chancellors Family Center. While still completing his final team roster, Coach Zeze lead a loaded SJS team of experienced veterans against teams from all over the greater Houston area.
Lead by senior captions Ava Phan and Dalia Khera, the Team displayed its depth and strength in several decisive matches. Nadia Khera came in 2nd place in the Girls A Singles main draw, losing a close back-and-forth finals match. Isabella Diaz-Mira convincingly won the consolation bracket of the Girls A Singles main draws. The accomplished doubles team of Dalia Khera (captain) and Ava Phan (captain) breezed through the Girls A Doubles main draw, finishing in 1st place. The doubles team of Mia Hong and Sophia Jammar easily won the consolation bracket of the Girls A Singles main draw. Playing in the an all-St. John’s finals match in the Girls B Doubles main draw, the team of Kate Lu and Morgan Meneely enjoyed a 1st place victory with the team of Emma Chang and Natasha Janssen taking 2nd place.
With the auspicious start at the Chancellors Tournament, the Team has set a bar high this year in wanting to repeat at SPC champions. Coach Zeze plans to finalize the full team roster in the upcoming week and is excited to lead the Team on another championship run.
The next match play for the Team will be at the invitational Episcopal High School Tournament to be held at The Downtown Club at the Met on February 17, 2023.
