Girls Soccer Pulling out the Stops

The 2025 Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach Rachel Fabre is in the second season of her second stint at the helm of the program. After spending 18 years leading the girls cross country team and doubling up as the girls soccer head coach until 2014, Fabre is now solely focused on the girls soccer program. In year “2-2,” Fabre keeps things fresh for the Mavericks. With the buy-in of the team and leadership of the captains, she is planting seeds for the program to flourish in the years ahead and contend now.

“Their willingness to try new things, buy into and grow their team identity, and also their willingness to share thoughts and ideas with the coaching staff has been fantastic,” said Fabre.

One noticeable change has been the schedule. The Mavericks have played tough non-conference teams losing a majority of their games. This included a trip to California during the Thanksgiving break to play two top teams in the state. They lost both contests but gained intangible strengths that have the Mavs on a three-game winning streak in conference play.

“This was our first year on a retreat and it was crucial in bonding the team at an early start of the season, and now reflects how we play as one unit.” said captain Harper Rhee ’25. “The trip was super fun and Fabre knows how to pack in activities.”

While in California, the team went to the opening night of Wicked, a puppy yoga class, and a cooking class where everyone had a role in the preparation of the dinner.

New this season, the Varsity is developing leadership skills by mentoring and helping coach the St. John’s Middle School Girls teams.

“I think it really strengthens our program, especially that connection between middle school and high school” said captain Alex Bucy ’25. “We want to encourage middle school girls to love the program and take that same love and passion to high school. This helps the varsity players be confident with their soccer knowledge and how to lead.”

Fabre also implemented a “Winter Fitness Challenge” to help the Mavs keep their edge during the winter break. The whole team is divided into two teams competing in workouts for mileage and times.

“Many people would think of winter break as a great time to rest which it is, but it is also a time where many of our skills and our fitness can fade away, so I think it speaks for itself when our team collectively decided to do this winter break challenge,” said captain Avery Mirza’25." The workouts are hard, but it is very nice to know that the rest of your team is doing them alongside you to keep you accountable!”
