Mavericks Beat Crusaders, Improve to 2-0 in SPC Play
St. John's travelled to Austin on Friday to play SPC rival St. Andrews. Coming off a great Thursday practice, the Mavs were focused and ready to play hard from the first whistle. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead just three minutes into the match with goals from Kate & Laynie and two from Clemo. Claire and Sarah finished off the scoring for the half with 2 more tallies each. Grace did a nice job with the draw, setting up many Maverick draw controls. Chandler also worked hard a midfield, causing several Crusader turnovers. Defense, led by Leigh, Aly, Loren, Caitlin & Lindsay, had a solid half, holding the Crusaders to just one goal until the last 2 minutes of the half, when a few mental mistakes led to goals for the opponents. Loren came up with a goal saving take-away check; Leigh had a nice interception; and Caitlin's sizzling hustle got her in the right place at the right time, time and time again. Aly, coming off a season high 16 saves against Germantown, had another good outing in the nets.
The Mavs played a solid second half, working to improve transition play, off-ball movement, play calling, ball control and communication. Jewett got the scoring started, followed by Laynie's and Kate's second goals of the day. Maggie proved her mental toughness, her play unhindered by a new stick. Hallie hustled non-stop at midfield. Sarah and Alli G finished off the scoring, while defense thwarted many fast breaks by the Cru.
With the win, the Mavs improve to 2-0 in SPC South competition, 8-0 overall in TX play. The Mavs face some tought competition in their next three games: Cy Fair, Memorial and Kinkaid all due up at home. Go Mavs! Get ready for some great games!!
