The 2007 coaching staff is an excellent group of experienced and
younger coaches, working together with the girls and boys high school
Mavericks. Head Coach Richie Mercado; Assistant Head Coach Dawn Kelly; Assistant Coaches - Stace Agee, Steve Collier, Viet Do, Sean Martin, and Nick Williams.
Richie Mercado, in his 23rd year at St. John's School, served as boys' head coach since 1986 and has coached both teams the past two years. He coaches the sprinters, vaulters, and high jumpers and is USATF Level II Certified in the Jumps and serves as a USTF Level I Coaches Education Instructor. After competing at St. John's, he was a high jumper and decathlete at the University of Virginia. He has served as the USATF Women's Jr. Elite Horizontal Jumps Instructor and is currently the High School Coordinator for the USATF Women's Development Jr. Heptathlon Program. Coach Mercado has also been the boys cross country coach since 1989.
Dawn Kelly is in her fourth year at St. John's and coaches the sprints and horizontal jumps. Originally from Michigan, she competed in volleyball and in track & field as a horizontal jumper at the University of Wisconsin. Coach Kelly also is the Head Coach of Girls Volleyball at St. John's School.
Stacy Agee, a native Virginian, competed in track & field, basketball and softball in high school. At Virginia Commonwealth University, she excelled in basketball on a full scholarship. She has played seven seasons of professional women's football with the Houston Energy while working as a personal trainer and running a training boot camp for women. Coach Agee has worked with the track team coaching sprints and relays for the past four years, and she also coaches JV football and girls JV and Varsity basketball.
Viet Do, a native Houstonian and graduate of Dobie High School, enters his second season as assistant coach for the Maverick Track and
Field team, working primarily with the distance and middle distance athletes.
Prior to assisting at St. John's School, he worked as an assistant coach at Stanford, Columbia, and the College of William and Mary. He competed
collegiately at Columbia University, specializing in the 400m, 800, and 1500m
as well as Cross Country. Coach Viet also is the boys cross country assistant coach, and outside of his duties at St. John's, he helps his family run a food production factory making
eggrolls daily here in Houston.
Steve Collier played a year of football and threw shot for Texas A&M University after being a Junior College All-American at Blinn College in the Shot Put. He is in his first year of part-time coaching the throwers at St. John's School. Coach Collier spends most of his time as a strength and fitness trainer at "The Next Level."
Sean Martin, a native of Reno, Nevada, was a state finalist in the hurdles and competed collegiately at Stanford University. He is in his third year as a part-time assistant helping with sprints and coaching the hurdlers. Coach Martin has recently completed medical school at the Baylor College of Medicnie and will soon be on his way to residency as an oncologist in Denver, Colorado.
Nick Williams is in his first year at St. John's School in a teaching and coaching internship. A native of Abilene, he graduated from Texas Tech University, where he vaulted for one year. Coach Williams is helping with the vaulters and has also been an assistant coach in boys volleyball and wrestling.
