Finley Ties Pole Vault Record; Girls 4x400 Runs Season Best
Blaine Finley tied the 24 year old record in the Pole Vault (Frank McMurrey, 1973) by vaulting 15'0" and winning the Section "B" Pole Vault at the 80th Texas Relays. In his best competition to date, Blaine opened at 13'6" and cleared every height on the first attempt. Only three vaulters went to 15'6", and when no one cleared the height, Blaine was the winner with no misses in the competiton before that height. Frank McMurrey's 15'0" vault is still one of the oldest St. John's Records, and the track is named in his honor and memory. Blaine's 15'0" with no misses would have placed him no worse that 8th in the "A" Section of the vault, contested in much warmer, calmer conditions that afternoon. The Girls 4x400 team also ran an exceptional race, clocking a season best 4:04.75. Although they did not make the final, it was an impressive performance, with Jessica Chen, Renee Keller, Meredith Gamble, and Candace Bailey running strong legs and Jessica, Renee and Candace running personal best splits. The team officially finished 11th in the 3A and below preliminaries, and their time was faster that 39 teams in the 4A-5A division!
The Girls 4x800 team of Meredith Gamble, Kelley Harrison, Nelly Kontchou and Catie Reynolds finished 11th out of 15 teams in 9:58.01.
On Saturday morning the cold front hit, dropping temperatures to the low 40s with light rain, high winds, and a wind chill around the freezing mark! The Maverick team of Catie Reynolds, Renee Keller, Meredith Gamble and Emily Watkins finished 13th out of 17 teams in the Distance Medley with a time of 13:21.62. In the 4x100, Jessica Chen beat everyone in the first leg to handoff to MacKenzie Hicks, who ran a strong leg along with third runner Janie Wilde. Anchor candace Bailey finished strong to pull the Mavericks into second place in the heat witha great time of 51.69 in the frigid conditions! The team qualified in the 8th spot for the finals, but we decided to head home with the weather worsening and conditions getting dangerous.
