The Mavs started slow but they were finally able to gain some traction on long TD runs by Jonathan Newar in the second half to lead the Mavs to a 34-0 win over St. Michael's on Wednesday afternoon.
Ben Griffin got the Mavs on the board in the first quarter by executing a perfect counter option play and running the ball in to the end zone from 30 yards out. The 2-point pass conversion failed despite a diving catch by Will Griffin. Jonathan Avery scored from 5 yards out in the second quarter to put the Mavs up 12-0 going in to the half.
The defense got a stop early in the 3rd quarter on a 4th down play inside Mavs territory, and the Mavs offense took advantage of the possession on the first play as Jonathan Newar rambled 60 yards for the score. The defense stuffed St. Michael's again on forth down inside the Mavs red zone on the next possession, and once again, the Mavs put the ball in to the hands of Jonathan Newar who took the ball up the middle for 80 yards to paydirt. Grayson Crady scored on the 2 point conversion to put the Mavs up 26-0 late in the 3rd quarter.
On St. Michael's next possession, the Mavs forced a turnover, and after several nice runs by Logan Smith, he was able to finally find the end zone from 1 yard out for the Mav's final touchdown. Ben Griffin completed the 2 point conversion pass to Will Griffin, giving the Mavs the final score of 34-0.
