Houston Christian Game

The Mavericks give the Houston Christian Mustangs their first loss of the season and improve their record to 3-0. Being Parents Night and the first home game of the year the stage was set for some excitement. St. John's won the toss and Jett Williams returned the opening kickoff 26 yards to the Maverick 32. On the first play from scrimmage Jett then raced 68 yards down the sideline for the score. Josh Winslow running the veer just like you draw it up on the board putting the ball in the pocket of fullback Rush Moody then pulling while getting to the outside for a pitch to Jett who turned on the jets and out ran the pursuit to the goal line. Dan Tweardy tacked on the extra point and the Mavericks were up 7-0 after just only 17 ticks off the clock. Tweardy then kicked the ball deep on the ensuing kickoff while Sam Dunn and William Jewett hustled down field to cover making the tackle at the 23. The defense took the field and after three plays led by William Payne and John Nutter the Mustangs were forced to punt. Unfortunately the Mavericks mishandled the ball and Houston Christian recovered on the Mavs 39. It did not take long for the Mustangs to capitalize on the turnover running just four plays and getting into the endzone to tie the score at 7 all. The next possession for St. John's was not as productive as the first with Jack Waller having to punt the ball away after a three and out. The defense came back and after nine plays forced Houston Christian to try a field goal that went wide right. The offense then buckled down and put together a 15 play drive highlighted by Josh Winslow carrying the ball 8 times in the drive and Rush Moody finishing it off with a 1 yard run. Tweardys kick was good and the Mavericks took the lead 14-7 early in the second quarter. Mustangs mounted an 8 play drive down to the St. John's 12 but John Ytterberg denied any score with an interception in the end zone. The offense took the field starting at their own 6 yard line. Jett carried on the first play for some breathing room out to the 11 then Josh connected with Reed Daniel on a picture perfect pass that went 89 yards with Reed turning on his jets for the score. After missing the extra point the Mavericks had the lead 20-7. With another deep kickoff from Tweardy and excellent coverage again from Sam Dunn and William Payne the Mavericks made the Mustangs start from their own 20. The fired up defense wasted no time with big plays from Jack Waller and Walker Hobby forcing the Mustangs to punt after a three and out. The offense got the ball on their own 40 with only three minutes left in the half. Josh Winslow then went to work running 8 plays that include a 38 yard scamper down to the 10. With the clock running out he then threw a pass to Will Wallace who came close but no cigar getting stopped on the 1. The Mavericks had to settle for a 20-7 half time lead.

The second half started with Houston Christian receiving the kickoff from Tweardy while Gothard Reck and William Jewett teamed up on the tackle at the 30. The defense took the field and playing the bend but don't break held the Mustangs on a fourth down and two after 9 plays with Chris Gow and Walt Baker getting the stop to give the ball to the offense. Starting at their own 34 and running five plays the Mavericks had their second turnover of the game with a fumble that was recovered by the Mustangs at the St. John's 45. Again taking advantage of the turnover the Mustangs took the ball in 8 plays and scored on a 2 yard run making the score 20-13 at the end of the third quarter after the missed extra point. Houston Christian then tried the onside kick but St. John's was ready and made the recovery at the SJS 46. Mounting a 14 play drive the Mavericks got the ball down to the 5 but had to settle for a 22 yard field goal on fourth down by Tweardy to increase the lead to 23-13. Houston Christian then answered with a drive of their own going 71 yards in 10 plays to score with 3 minutes left in the game. The St. John's offense needed to take control and run out the clock but the Mustangs had the momentum and held with a three and out forcing the Mavericks to punt. Jack Waller got off a nice high punt and the Houston Christian returner fumbled making a mad scramble for the ball. Unfortunately the Mustangs came up with it and took possession on their own 35 with one minute to play. Reeling off two pass plays one for 16 yards and the other for 8 yards the Mustangs got the ball down to the St. John's 41. Unable to stop the clock Houston Christian threw one last time but could not connect giving the Mavericks the win in an exciting finish. Go Red, Go Black, Maverick Football, We're Back!
