When you don't play as well as the other team you don't usually win and that was the case against the St. Mark's Lions. The Mavericks bringing a 4-0 record and 1-0 in conference play suffered their first loss of the season to a consistent St. Mark's team. After winning the toss the Mavericks elected to receive and started the game off with a nice 31 yard return by Will Wallace but after 7 plays the Mavericks went for a 4th and 3 at the Lions 32 yard line and fell short giving the ball up on downs. St. Mark's wasted no time going the distance for the first score of the game. The drive went 8 plays 68 yards highlighted by a 17 yard pass play on 3rd and 9 and a 35 yard pass play to set up the 3 yard run for the score. St. John's was able to answer on the next possession going 70 yards in just 4 plays with Josh Winslow finishing the job on a 41 yard run for the score. Dan Tweardy tacked on the extra point and the score was tied after the first quarter. The defense then woke up and gave St. mark's a three and out making the Lions punt the ball. The offense took over at their own 27 getting the ball across midfield only to stall out at the St.Mark's 38 after a loss, incomplete pass and a sack. Facing a 4th and 17 on the Lions 45 Jack Waller was summoned to punt. Having the ball on their on 20 the Lions marched down the field converting a 3rd and 6, 3rd and 3 and 3rd and 7 for the 12 play 80 yard drive that finished with 22 yard pass reception to take the lead 7-14 mid way through the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff Reed Daniel had a great return going 41 yards a getting the ball to the SJS 44. Again the offense churned up yardage moving down to the St. Mark's 21 but coughed up the ball on a fumble which the Lions recovered. St. Mark's took advantage of the turnover going 77 yards in just 5 plays highlighted by a 33 yard pass and a 16 yard pass for the touchdown and a 14 point lead. The Lions then pinned the Mavericks back on their on 9 yard lined with a deep kickoff and good coverage. Running only four play and gaining only 19 yards the Mavericks were forced to punt the ball away with 52 seconds left in the half. Starting with good field position the Lions tried to go for another score throwing it deep but Reed Daniel was there for the interception and returned the ball to the St. Mark's 37 to give the Mavericks a chance for the end zone with 32 seconds in the half. Josh Winslow then completed a pass to Will Wallace for 14 yards but was sacked on the next play forcing a timeout to be called with 18 seconds. After two incomplete passes the Mavericks went for the end zone only to have the ball intercepted to end the half behind 7-21.
Dan Tweardy teed the ball up to start the second half and after the kickoff the Lions had the ball on their own 39. Just as they had done in the first half St. Mark's came up with the big play hitting their receiver on a 50 yard pass to the SJS 8 then two plays later scoring on a 4 yard run put the Mavericks down 7-28 early in the third. On the kickoff Jett Williams comes up with a big return going 46 yards to give the ball in good field position for the offense. Just when it looked like the Mavericks were going to take the ball down the field an offside penalty was called to make it 3rd and 12 instead of 3rd and 7. Winslow then hit Jett Williams in the flats for a 2 yard gain for a 4th and 10 at the St. Mark's 28. Going for the fourth down Winslows pass was incomplete and the Mavericks turn the ball over on downs. The Lions took possession but after a big hit by Chris Gow on a St. Mark's receiver there was a fumbled and Reed Daniel pounced on the ball giving the possession back to the Mavericks. Unfortunately the offense stalled again with two penalties in a row to force a punt. The defense stepped up again and again it was Chris Gow making the play with an interception giving the ball to the Mavericks on the Lions 26. The play from Gow swung the momentum to the mavericks which the offense took advantage of and put the ball in the end zone in three plays with Winslow starting it foo with a 16 yard scamper and Rush Moody finishing it off with a 10 yard run to pay dirt. The was cut to 14 with 1:02 left in the third. On the next possession the momentum was still St. John's while the defense recorded another three and out giving the ball back to the offense. buckling down the offense started to grind it out running 14 plays covering 60 yards but could not put the finishing touch throwing an incomplete pass in the end zone on fourth and three from the 10 yard line with 5:48 left in the game. St. Mark's took over at the 10 and picking up only one first down had to punt. The offense took the field for another try but it was just not meant to be. Running 10 plays and getting the ball down to the Lions 7 yard line the Mavericks jumped offsides moving the ball back to the 12. On the next play the ball was fumbled then recovered but losing yardage back to the 19. On fourth and goal at the 19 the pass was incomplete with a questionable no call in the end zone with 2:30 left in the game. Again just not meant to be. St. Mark's took possession to run out the clock and come up with their first win of the season and giving the Mavericks their first loss of the season.
