Episcopal Game

The rain was coming down the field was wet and the Mavericks struggled to find their momentum at Simmons field home of the Episcopal Knights. Episcopal lined up to kick to open the game with Caldwell Flores and Jett Williams back to return for the Mavericks. Fielding the ball on the two yard line Flores was able to bring the ball out to the 21 where the Mavericks would start first and ten. On the first play Josh Winslow took it around the left end for a pick up of fourteen. An offsides penalty against the Knights on the next play and it was first and five at the 38. Josh then made a pitch to William Payne for another first down gaining seven yards. Josh was then stopped for a loss and Rush Moody carried the ball twice for 4 and 5 yards the Mavericks were faced with a 4th and 2 at the Episcopal 47. St . John's then elected to go for a fake punt but was not able to convert as Chris Gow's pass was deflected and the Knights took over with good field position. EHS gaining 15 yards on their first play was turned back by the SJS defense stopping the Knights for a 1 yard gain and two incomplete to force the punt. Landing in the endzone the Mavericks took over at the 20. The offense was not able to get anything going and after a three and out Jack Waller was called upon to punt. Again the Knights having good field position at the SJS 49 after a 28 yard punt busted open the first play for a 49 yard touchdown run to take the lead 0-7 with 6:35 in the first quarter. Starting at their own twenty after a touchback the Mavericks again could not muster any offense and another three and out had to punt. With good field position at The SJS 46 the Knights made a first down but after a fumble for a one yard loss went for a fourth and five. William Payne, John Nutter and Walker Hobby teamed up for the stop and no gain giving the offense another try to make something happen with the ball at the 30. Sloppy weather and sloppy play kept both teams from doing anything for the next few series both going three and out until EHS mounted a 12 play drive from their own 10 after a 41 yard punt by Waller. Going 90 yards the Knights punched it in on fourth and goal from the three for another score and the lead of 0-14 going into halftime.

Starting the second half the Knights received the kickoff and drove the ball down to the SJS 16 yard line but fumbled and John Nutter was able to recover giving the ball to the Mavericks at their own 20. Facing a third and nine the Josh dropped back to pass but was blind sided dropped the ball and the Knights scooped it up and ran it in for another score and a comanding lead of 0-21 with 6:16 left in the third. After some more three and outs by both teams and the third quarter about to end the Mavericks got the ball back on their own 21. Three plays later Josh threw a pass to William Wallace which was deflected landing in the hands of Jett Williams who proceeded to take it 76 yards to the end zone for a score giving the Mavericks a little momentum going into the fourth quarter and a 7-21 score. Some more sloppy play in the fourth with ball teams fumbling the ball again for the third time only to have the Knights recover the last one on the SJS 26. With a 20 yard run and a 6 yard run the Knights put up another score with 3:35 left in the game to make it 7-28. The Mavericks were not going to give up though and Reed Daniel took the ensuing kickoff to the house going 100 yards with some excellent blocking and great running to cut the lead to 14-28. Jack Griffin then kicked a nice onside but the Mavericks were unable to recover. The defense stepped up though forcing the Knights to punt. With a minute left in the game the Mavericks took the ball at their own 32. With clutch passes to Reed Daniel and Caldwell Flores, Josh Winslow was able to work the ball down to the EHS 27. With one play left Josh threw the ball into the endzone only to have it picked off for the final score of 14-28. A tough game as usual but was very proud of the teams effort to the end, finishing off strong and making the Knights remember who we are. The St. John's Mavericks!
