Casady Game

The mark of a good team is how they bounce back after some adversity. The let down of a defeat at the hands of Episcopal was that adversity and the St. John's Mavericks bounced back to show that they are a good team. The Casady Cyclones came to town traveling from Oklahoma City and the Mavericks had something to prove playing their last game at home on Skip Lee Field. The game started with St. John's receiving the kickoff and Caldwell Flores returning the ball 42 yards giving the Mavericks good field position on the Cyclones 47. The offense took the field but failed to pick up a first down and Jack Waller had to punt the ball away. The defense who played spectacular throughout the game started off with one of their five three and outs and the Cyclones punting. Another great return from the Mavericks punt return team with Reed Daniel breaking for 39 yards gave the offense good field position at the Casady 23. Rush Moody keeping the drive alive on a fourth and one and Josh Winslow turning in some clutch plays finally finishing it off with a 5 yard run into the end zone the Mavericks were able to put points on the board with four minutes left in the first to lead 7-0 after Dan Tweardy made good on the extra point. Casady then proceeded to put some plays together one being a 23 yard toss but Walker Hobby came up with a big play knocking a pitch out of the air for an eleven yard loss and putting the pressure on the Cyclones with a 2nd and 21. Having a one yard pass on the next play followed by an incomplete put Casady facing a fourth and 20 to make them punt the ball away. Each team then trade three and outs going into the second quarter when the SJS offense decided to put together a 13 play 66 yard drive using their trio of backs Jett Williams, Rush Moody (picking up a big first down and a fourth and 2) and Josh Winslow before Josh took it in again from the 6 for the score. Dan Tweardy tacked on the extra point and the Mavericks increased their lead to 14-0. The defense stuffed the Cyclones with Jack Waller, Walker Hobby, William Payne and Chris Gow leading the charge to end the first half.
Dan Tweardy teeing it up for the second half kicked off and the Cyclones came up with the ball on their own 28. Coming out in a power offense Casady took the ball right at the Mavericks running fourteen plays with a first and goal from the eight yard line. The St. John's defense bowed its back and it came down to a fourth and goal at the two. Casady elected to go for the score but William Payne broke through and sacked the quarterback for a 7 yard loss thwarting the attack and keeping the Cyclones out of the end zone. The Mavericks took over at their own nine. With Jett Williams busting it out with three great runs the offense was able to get out of the hole but stalled at the 33 and Jack Waller had to come on and punt. The defense then stifled the Cyclones again with their fifth three and out making them punt the ball in which Reed Daniel returned 16 yards. Running eight plays and Rush Moody churning up yardage the Mavericks crossed the goal line with a 17 yard run by Rush put the Mavericks up 21-0 going into the fourth quarter. On the ensuing kickoff the Cyclones made a last ditch effort going 74 yards in eight plays and finishing with a 39 yard touchdown toss to get on the board 21-7. With 7:00 minutes left in the game the Mavericks lined up to protect an onside kick but the Cyclones kicked the ball deep and Jett Williams was there to return it 24 yards. Jett then took the first play 27 yards which started a drive of 71 yards with Rush finishing it off on a 5 yard run after his 15 yard run to get it to the 5. A good answer by the offense that took the wind out of the Cyclones. The next series John Ytterberg came up with an incredible interception and the offense was able to run out the clock to take the victory. Way to go Mavericks!
