Holland Hall Game

The trip to Tulsa Oklahoma was a tough one. Not only did we come up short on the scorboard but our hopes of an SPC championship game had ended. All this was not given up easy though as the Mavericks fought hard to the finish and made the Dutch have to play their best to come out alive. The game started with Holland Hall kicking off. The Mavericks wasted no time. After Will Wallace returned the kickoff to the 38 Josh Winslow went 50 yards on the first play to the Dutch 18 yard line. Josh then carried the ball two more times before giving it to Rush Moody to cap the drive and a 6 yard score. The extra point went wide and with 10:33 in the first quarter the Mavs had the lead 6-0. The Dutch then answered back with their own drive going 76 yards in 11 plays. Having 1st and goal at the one the Maverick defense got three stops with Walker Hobby, John Nutter, Henry Ellison, Chris Gow, and Jack Craddock making plays on the Dutch running game. Facing a 4th and goal at the two the Dutch had to throw the ball and completed the two yard pass for the score. After the extra point Holland Hall took the lead 6-7. On the next possession St. John's stalled on the Dutch 46 and Jack Waller got off a 40 yard punt that pinned the Dutch back on thier own six. After getting three first downs and moving the ball to the 43 the Dutch threw the ball on a 3rd and nine and William Payne stepped in front of the pass to knock it down and force Holland Hall to punt the ball. Going into the second quarter the Mavericks had the ball but turned it over on an interception on their own 41 yard line. The Dutch took advantage of the turnover and went the distance finishing with a one yard run for their second score to increase their lead to 6-14. The Mavericks failing to get a first down on thier next possession punted the ball back to the Dutch. On the second play Holland Hall's speedy running back broke through the SJS defense for a 75 yard jaunt to the end zone and raised the score to 6-21. After a kickoff return by Reed Daniel the Mavericks put together a drive from their own 39 with Rush Moody carrying the load down to the Dutch 17. With the clock running down before half the Mavericks went for the end zone only to have the Dutch come up with their second interception and send the game into halftime.
The start of the second half saw the Mavericks holding the Dutch to a three and out and John Ytterberg putting pressure on the punter came up with an 8 yard punt giving the Mavericks good field position at the Dutch 41. Taking advantage of the field postion the Mavericks put together a 41 yard drive in 9 plays on the running of Rush, Jett and Josh with Josh finishing with a one yard touchdown carry. Dan Tweardy added the extra point and the lead was cut to 13-21. Again the Dutch answered the SJS score with their own drive going 64 yards in 11 plays with a 13 yard run for the score leading 13-28 going into the fourth quarter. Will Wallace receiving the Kickoff for his fourth return went 17 yards giving the Mavericks the ball on the 34. After 5 plays getting the ball out to the 48 the Mavericks suffered their third turnover with another interception. The defense was then able to hold forcing the Dutch to punt and getting the ball back to the offense. Starting to move the ball SJS put together three first downs but bad luck struck again when the Mavericks fumbled the ball for turnover number four. The Dutch were able to run out the remaining four minutes with a fourth and nine fake punt to keep possession and secure the win.
