The Mavericks fought to the end but ran out of time falling to the Falcons by one to end the season. It is hard to finish the last game with a loss but the real finish should focus on the excellent season the Mavericks were able to put together this year. The seniors started this comeback from a 1-9 record last year to a strong 6-4 record this year leaving a building block and goal for the next years seniors to continue the climb to the top. St. John's started the Kinkaid game by kicking off to the Falcons. The first play William Payne made a big hit on the Falcon receiver to cause a fumble and Jack Craddock came up with the recovery. With good field position on the Kinkaid 38 Jett williams ran to plays to the outside picking up big yardage and a first down on the 19. The next two plays were not as successful losing yardage back to the 25. Throwing on fourth and 16 the Mavericks were picked off in the end zone giving the Falcons the ball on the 20. After two first downs and moving the ball out to the 50 The Falcons were forced to punt by Conrad Lozano, Chris Gow, Jack Waller and Sam Dunn making defensive plays. After trading possessions the Falcons were unsuccessful on a 38 yard field goal attempt and the Mavericks took over to start the second quarter. Josh Winslow hit Will Wallace on a 17 yard pass and the offense was moving the ball until a holding penalty caused a fourth and 15 so Jack Waller was called upon to punt. Kinkaid then mounted a drive that took them to the Maverick 7 yard line but Stephen Firestone stripped the ball from a Falcon running back and Reed Daniel jumped on the loose ball in the end zone to give the Mavericks the ball on the 20. With time running out in the first half the Mavericks drove the ball down to the Falcon 26 and went for the end zone on the last play of the half but the pass was deflected and at the half the score remained 0-0. The second half started with the Mavericks receiving the kickoff as Reed Daniel returned it 10 yards to the 35. After some halftime adjustments the Mavericks cranked it up with the rushing game of Jett Williams, Rush Moody and Josh Winslow going 65 yards in 8 plays with Josh getting the score on a 27 yard run. Dan Tweardy tacked on the extra point and the Mavericks were in the lead 7-0. Kinkaid tried to answer on their next possession getting the ball down to the Maverick 8 but Jack Waller got a big stick on the Kinkaid running back them cough up another fumble and Jack Craddock recovered for the second time. The offense struggled to move the ball after the turnover and was forced to punt. Having good field position on the Maverick 47 Kinkaid making a clutch play on 2nd and 20 came up with a 27 yard pass to the 18 and another 16 yard pass to the one where they punched it in for the score to tie it up 7-7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. On the ensuing kickoff Walker Hobby returned the ball to the 40 and the Mavericks went back to work on a 13 play drive with the trio of backs working together and a nice throw and catch from Josh Winslow to Reed Daniel. Rush Moody was able to hit pay dirt on a three yard plunge. The extra point went wide right and the Mavericks were up 13-7 with 6:06 left in the game. On their next possession the Falcons were able to drive the field picking up four first downs one being a third and eight on the 17 to have it first and goal on the seven. Chris Gow came up with a big stop to make it 2nd and goal at the 2. On the next play Walker Hobby stuffed the hole causing a fumble that miraculously fell in the hands of another Kinakid player who was able to fall in the end zone for the score to tie the game at 13-13 needing the extra point to go ahead. The PAT was good and with 1:31 left in the game the Mavericks found themselves down by one point. Fighting to the end as they have done all season Jett Williams received the kickoff and returned the ball 25 yards to the Maverick 35. With time running out and no time outs left the Mavericks had to work hard to give themselves a chance. Scrambling in the Clutch formation Josh Winslow was able to get the ball across midfield. Then throwing a nice pass to Jett Williams the Mavericks had the ball on the Kinakid 24 before having to spike it to stop the clock. Two incomplete passes later facing a fourth and 10 with 6 seconds on the clock the Mavericks lined up to kick a 41 yard field goal which fell short. What an effort by the whole Maverick team to make the comeback to put themselves in a position to have the chance to win the game. The outcome was not in our favor but the fight to the finish was Maverick football all the way!
