Greenhill Game

It was Thu. afternoon, 5:00pm, and the sun was piercing the sideline but the conditions did not faze the Mavericks as they got after the Hornets from the get go. Winning the toss and electing to receive Cameron Neal returned the opening kickoff and St. John's waisted no time on their first drive. Josh Winslow took charge reeling off runs of 42 and 32 and the Mavericks scored first in a 7 play drive capped by Stephen Firstone 1 yard plunge for the touchdown and Dan Tweardy with the point after. Leading 7-0 the Maverick defense stepped onto the field and caused a turnover on Greenhills first possession with Trevor Bernard knocking the ball loose and Douglas Berkman with the recovery. The offense came back out and with the trio of rushers in Josh Winslow, Caldwell Flores and Stephen Firestone worked the ball down to the Hornets 4 yard line. But on 4th and 3 SJS was hit with a 5 yard penalty making it 4th and 8 and decided to go for the field goal. Dan Tweardy hit the 19 yarder and the score was 10-0. Greenhill with a good return on the ensueing kickoff got the ball out to the 40 but the defense made no mistakes and held the Hornets to the first of 4 three and outs. Douglas Berkman then fielded the punt with a nice return of 17 yards. SJS taking over at the 48 Winslow then carried the ball for a scamper down to the 22 then hit Will Wallace in the endzone for a 22 yard touchdown for a score of 17-0. Another three and out by the defense with Jack Waller and Chris Gow making some big plays the Hornets were forced to punt starting the second quarter. Kicking from their own 5 yard line the Mavericks were able to capitalize on good field position with the ball on the Hornet 37. Winslow took the first play of the series for 29 yards down to the 8. Flores then picked up 6 yards to the 2 but on the next play the ball got loose and William Carver was able to fall on it to save a turnover. Firestone then crossed the goal line and Tweardy with the extra point bringing the lead to 24-0. Tweardy then put the kickoff in the endzone for a touchback and the defense hit the field again forcing the Hornets to punt with another three and out. Will Wallace then recovered his own fumble on the punt return and the Mavericks took over at the GH 48. Caldwell Flores then took the ball on a 48 yard run with some nifty cut backs to score and increasing the lead to 31-0. The next Hornet possession ended like the previous ones with the SJS defense narry giving an inch. Jake Horowitz came up with a big hit for a 7 yard loss and the Hornets found themselves facing another fourth down. Ben Griffin called for a fair catch on the punt and the Mavericks took over at the GH 31. Moving the ball 31 yards in 6 plays Firestone finished the drive with a 6 yard carry and the lead was 38-0. Greenhill then was able to get a little momentum going with the help of a few penalties and took the ball on a 5 play 73 yard drive with a 32 yard pass that put them on the board going into halftime.
The second half started with the SJS defense forcing the Hornets to punt inside their own 20 when the snap went over the punters head and out of the endzone for a safety. The score was now 40-7 and the Mavericks were receiving the kickoff from the GH 20 after the safety. Cameron Neak was able to return the ball to the GH 49 but SJS was called for an illegal block which put the ball back on the SJS 39. Stephen Firestone then carried the ball four times and Josh Winslow hitting Tim Otey on a 14 yard pass the Mavericks got the ball to the GH 25. Winslow then finished the drive taking the ball 25 yards for the score and Dan Tweardy again making good on the extra point and the score was now 47-7. The third quarter ended with Nick Cassata picking off a GH pass and returning it 9 yards. The Mavericks took over and Winslow picked up the last of his 245 yards rushing with a 61 yard run in the start of the 4th quarter for the last score. Tweardy being perfect on PAT's added the one and the score was 54-7. Greenhill was able to work a drive that covered 69 yards in 10 plays to put up another score but that was all she wrote and the final tally was 54-14!
