A solid first game. This evening the young Mavs were pitted against the Cavaliers from Katy on a rather chilly Valentine's evening at Skip Lee Field. Will Turley got the scoring started with a nice low shot on a feed from Trey Lewis to help the Mavericks take an early 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Paul Labanowski scored two unassisted goals to push the lead to 3-0. Michael Cowan was the next Maverick to score on another sweet assist from Lewis. Katy answered with two goals of their own to cut the lead in half. Labanowski answered with two more goals one unassisted and another on an assist from Harrison Hawes. Marcus Manca found the back of the net to push the lead to 7-2. Cowan from Lewis and another Labanowski goal gave the Mavericks a 10-2 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Mavericks looked better at running their offense. Labanowski found the back of the net for his sixth and final goal of the game. Hawes to John Viguet pushed the lead to 12-2. Katy scored their third thereafter, and finally Arden Onanian scored the last goal for St. John's on an assist from Manca to complete the scoring. 13-3. Defensively, John Sholeen, Hunter Kowalski, Craig Fiedorek, Philip Kensinger and Charles Dorfman held the Cavaliers in check for most of the night. Pete Bechtol, Ben Wolf and Alex Hammerman didn't crack the scoring sheet but they all had high work rates and moved the ball well. The boys will now train for a few days before taking a week off to visit Big Bend National Park where they will be hiking and and working on their dodging against the local Javelinas that will permeate the camp. Thanks to all the parents who sacrificed their Valentine's dates to come watch some lacrosse.
