Mavericks Put Away Wolves in Overtime Thriller

"The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That's real glory."
- Vince Lombardi

On March 27th we lost our first conference game to St. Francis. No question about it.... it hurt. We got knocked to our knees. We knew we had to win the remaining games on the schedule and beat them in the rematch to claim the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference title.  We knew it would be a physical match up.  We knew we were the better lacrosse team and we set out to prove it.  The game started out well for us as Marcus Manca found the back of the net to stake us to a 1-0 lead.  St. Francis answered back with a goal of their own to knot the score at 1-1.  Marcus Manca scored his second goal of the game on a feed from Trey Lewis to put us back up 2-1. Paul Labanowski would make it 3-1 only to have the Wolves cut it to 3-2. The third quarter was a good one for the Mavericks as the Wolves spent a lot of time in the penalty box for Trey Lewis scored with an assist from Paul Labanowski to put us up 4-2 and Will Turley found Pete Bechtol on the doorstep for our fifth goal and a 5-2 lead. St Francis would battle back and tie the score at 5-5. With the clock ticking down and under a minute to play in regulation Paul Labanowski would be leveled by a St Francis defender and taken from the field with a concussion.  The clock would expire and the Mavericks headed to sudden death overtime. First team to score would win.  The Mavericks won the faceoff and got the ball to the offensive end.  Arden Onanian was tripped from behind sending another St Francis player to the penalty box.  The Mavericks worked the ball patiently and Trey Lewis found Michael Cowan who had time and room to bury his shot into the back of the net sending the Wolves home with a loss and a well deserved victory for the Mavericks!!!!  Defensively Charles Dorfman, Hunter Kowalski, John Viguet, Craig Fiedorek, Philip "Philly Phil" Kensinger and John Sholeen stymied the Wolves.  Ben Wolf, Harrison Hawes and Alex Hammerman made significant contributions with their rides and gb's. Everyone on the team contributed to this win... whether it was your hard work in practice or during the game.  A total team effort by everyone!  We won by playing lacrosse today..the right way!!!  We have one final game left. A win means we are HJPC champions.  Let's get it done on Monday!!!
