After taking in the Carolina blue sky at the UNC - Princeton Men's Lacrosse game, the Mavs hit the field against Virginia's St. Anne's-Belfield.
A tradition of excellence for the St. John's Boys' Lacrosse program has been the spring break trip. For the 18th consecutive spring the team choose Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, a venue in which the 1997 and 2001 teams experienced. Like the past trips which included stops to Princeton, Baltimore, Charlotte, W&L, San Diego, Memphis, San Francisco, Orlando, Cocoa Beach, St. Petersburg, and Charlottesville, SJ Lax took advantage of the opportunity to match up against nationally ranked programs, find their identity, and leave a lasting impression on fans, opponents, and officials.
DAY ONE: Head over heels On day one the Mavericks were part of one of the largest crowds in UNC lacrosse history at the Princeton-North Carolina Men's game where they witnessed what many lacrosse aficionados described as the best NCAA game of the season. The Heels went back and forth with the Tigers and prevailed 16-15 in the last seconds of play.
Later that day on UNC's Navy Field St. John's took on St. Anne's Belfield, VA (STAB), where Coach Chambers started his coaching career in the late 80's. Peter Cordill '15 found the net first for the Mavericks to tie the game up early, but the Saints pulled away for a 7-2 win. Paul Loya '13 scored in the fourth period for St. John's. William Trieschman.
The most telling "play" of sportsmanship occurred after the game while both teams were regrouping on the sideline. STAB gathered in two rows and one of their players, a former gymnast, did a set of cartwheels and a flip to celebrate their win. As the St. John's team applauded, the Mavericks formed their own runway for Grayson Crady '13, who matched it with a running flip of his own. STAB coaches and players gave Grayson a standing ovation.
