Mavericks bounce back with a win over Durham Academy Cavaliers
On day 2 St. John's went back to Chapel Hill and more importantly, back to work arriving two hours before face off against the host school, Durham Academy Cavaliers at UNC's Henry Field Hockey Field.
Cordill struck first once more for the Mavs to give them an early lead, but the Cavaliers scored two unanswered goals before Will Griffin '13 unassisted and Paul Loya '13 (G. Crady) put the visitors back in the lead. Jonathan Newar '13 assisted Griffin for another goal and Carl Bernicker '14 scored with 2:22 remaining for a 5-2 half time lead.
Durham scored the only goal of the third period and the first score of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4 with 10:30 to go. Crady responded on an unassisted goal to put St. John's up by 2 with 9:51 remaining. DA scored at the five minute mark, to get back within one, but Cordill picked up a loose ball in front of the crease and fed Loya with a lever pass for what would be the game winner for the Mavs. The Cavs got one last goal with 15 seconds left. Stephen Wang '15 and Trieschman had 5 and 4 saves respectively. Bernicker led the team with 6 gb's.
