Mavericks finish regular season with a win over long time rival Lamar.
Since the THSLL league began in the late 1980's, Lamar and St. John's were not only in the same zip code, but shared a team together until both split in 1988. The longest standing rivalry in the league, Lamar and St. John's battled for hardware starting in 1989. St. John’s leads in all time victories (32-11-1), and until Lamar moved their home field to South Campus, both teams would walk down West Alabama to play in the annual “block party” game.
Lamar and St. John’ s have battled it out in four city championships: 1989, 1998, 2000, and 2001. Lamar won in 1989, and were a tough rival in all of the title bouts including the 2001 series. The Mavericks won both regular season games that year and defeated Lamar in the City Championship. Lamar upset St. Mary’s Hall to find their way into the State championship game against St. John’s. For the fourth time that season St. John’s prevailed in a nail biter as Campbell Eifler ’01 assisted Andrew Brice ’01 for the game winner with seconds remaining in regulation.
The 2013 Mavericks took a bus to South Campus fields for the traditional final regular season game. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and St. John’s took a 4-1 lead into the half. A third quarter barrage of seven unanswered goals put the Mavericks out of reach from the Redskins and one step closer towards the state playoffs.
Eleven players factored in the scoring for St. John’s, who hosts the Woodlands on Wednesday for a Super Regional tune up.
The Mavericks travel to Austin to compete in the Super Regional starting on Saturday against Austin High School at 11:00 a.m. (Westwood High School game field). For more information please click here.
