Our first meet is in the books! Well, almost! I am still waiting on official meet results, which I expect to be in today (Sunday).
We knew we were going to have a good time when we got there and Coach Halligan described the course—a rolling loop through the woods, and only 1.1 miles as opposed to the 1.6 miles the meet director had previously advertised. While some Mavericks felt cheated by the shortened course, others were not. The course was exactly as Coach Halligan described—a few rolling ‘hills’, a couple of sandy patches, and mostly through the woods, i.e., a lot of shade!
While the course was friendly, the start line was anything but! The competitors lined up two deep, as the line was a little too short to accommodate everyone. While our Maverick boys in the Division I race, unfortunately, were not on the start line itself, they were behind the fairly fast Cooper team and therefore did not have to negotiate any start line speed bumps! The start horn sounded, most made it away just fine, only a few boys from other schools had a tumble but were able to jump up and continue with no problems.
While the course was great for the competitors, it was awful for the spectators. Into the woods they ran and we didn’t see them again until they reappeared about 100 yards from the finish.
Sam Ho was the first Maverick to finish and he did so in the top 10, coming away with a medal and an unofficial time of 5:58.20. Sam Faraguna was our next finisher, coming in with a time of 6:21.96. Pearse Higgason was next in 6:40.10, John Boom in 6:43.21, Sam Fallon in 6:46.80, Jacob Roffwarg in 7:05.64, August Windham in 7:15.15, Peter Nikonowicz in 7:22.93, Will Symmans in 7:30.12, and Raunak Kundagrami in 7:50.02.
The next race was the Division II boys and as our unofficial results got somewhat muddled, I won’t have results for them until the official results from the meet come in. As soon as I get them I will update this post, so stay tuned!
Girls Division I ran after the boys were done. Unlike the boys, the girls enjoyed a much more civilized start line due to fewer teams entered. Our first Maverick to finish was Grace Huang who was third with a time of 6:54.98, and a medal. Mariela Areola was the next Maverick to finish with a time of 7:20.14. Bethany Ritter was next in 7:37.34, Sophie Gillard in 7:53.58, Emily Ellison in 8:16.31, Juliette Draper in 8:33.37, and Noel Madland in 8:37.55.
As soon as the official meet results come in I will post official times, places, and team results.
