Maverick JV Netters Ease into Spring Break with a Draw Against John Cooper

Harold Graham
The St. John's Maverick JV Boys finished up the first third of the season taking on SPC rivals from the Woodlands, the Dragons of John Cooper, at Lee LeClear Tennis Center.

Over the last few years, the Dragons have posed a difficult test for the Mavs and this year's edition would prove to be no different.

13 men traveled, with the match composed of two lines of Singles and six lines of Doubles.

In Singles, Asher Moll (2020) took the court first and got down a break early and that break of serve would stand for his opponent, leading to a 3-6 set score. Second up was Eli Maierson (2019) who then took to the singles court and was even until a late break of serve handed the line to the tune of a 4-6 set.

In Doubles, the first two doubles teams went on simultaneously.

At the first line, Nicholas Echeverri (2019) and Naveen Krishnan (2019) were even most of the way, finally succumbing 4-6 after a late break of serve. At Line 2, Ryan Chang (2019)and Kenji Chevray (2019) prevailed while producing two breaks of serve with a 6-2 win.

Next stepping onto the doubles court were Vivek Kapur (2019) and Andy Tockman (2019) at #3 and Will Heilmann (2020) and William Urdahl (2020) at Line 4. Vivek and Andy had a chance to take the match to the tie breaker on a 3 All point but it did not go their way as they fell 4-6. Mr. Heilmann and Mr. Urdahl breezed through their match while pretty much being in control from start to finish through solid play and not overcooking their chances, gaining a 6-1 win.

The last two tandems to take the court for the day were the teams of Thomas Goodgame (2020)/Asher Moll (2020) at #5 and Brinkley Morse (2020)/Julian Westerfield (2020) at #6. The Goodgame/Moll pairing produced good movement and controlled  aggression while moving forward and attacking the net, prevailing 6-1.

With the line scores at 3 for the Mavs and 4 for John Cooper, it all came down to Morse/Westerfield to get a result for the team. Things were looking a little rough as the boys got down a break, with Cooper serving at 4-3. Brinkley and Julian tightened their play up, reducing their errors and exerting pressure on their returns and net play, and made a three game run to pull out the match at 6-4.

The Mavericks now head into Spring Break, the halfway point on the calendar and the one third pole on the schedule.

Upon their return, the schedule does not get any easier with five matches in the first two weeks back against some stronger opposition, beginning with perennial power, Awty International, on Tuesday, March 21.

Team, family, friends, and fans, enjoy the break. And there is work still to be done, both on the practice and match courts.

Hope to see you at the matches upon our return.

Until we meet again, as always, go Mavericks!
