Mavericks Make Annual Trek to Pasadena Dobie

Harold Graham
On Wednesday, April 5, the Maverick Boys' JV Tennis Team made its annual trek to take on Pasadena J. Frank Dobie High School.

Coach Manuel Moreno always fields a tough, deep squad and this year would be no different.

On the windiest match day of the season, Doubles took the courts first.

DOUBLES

Ryan Chang (2019) and Naveen Krishnan (2019) went onto Court #7 against Austin/Ronald. The match had numerous opportunities for each side with our Mavericks coming out with the W on an 8-6 score.

On Court #5, Nicholas Echeverri (2019) and Eli Maierson (2019), had another tough one in the blustery wind, getting their break of serve to garner an 8-6 victory over Loney and Tim.

Vivek Kapur (2019) and Andy Tockman (2019) went onto Court #2 to take on Gerardo and Joseph C. This match was as tight as could be, coming down to a tie breaker at 8 all. Our lads could not a toe hold in the breaker and went down 8-9 (1-7). It was a tough ending to a well fought match.

Next onto Court #7 was the tandem of Will Heilmann (2020) and Asher Moll (2020) against Daniel and Joseph T. The wind and the opposition both proved to be no match, with our boys winning 8-3.

William Urdahl (2020) and Julian Westerfield (2020) then played Kevin and Tetse out on Court #1, showing enough to prevail 8-3. The wind was a factor but impacted the home side more than the Maverick travelers.

And, on Court #6, Thomas Goodgame (2020) and Brinkley Morse (2020) took on Sebastian and Duy. In this one, the host Longhorns got the upper hand early and our Maverick duo could not get back to level as the hosts prevailed by the score of 8-5.

SINGLES

First on Court #1, was Naveen Krishnan (2019) against Tim. Today, Naveen served well when it counted and came up on the winning end with a two break victory at 8-5.

Second on Court #7 was Ryan Chang (2019) versus Ronald. In an up and down match Ryan had more ups than downs and came through with an 8-4 victory.

Asher Moll (2020) again showed composure in his singles match against Loney, cruising to a 8-1 decision. Playing within one's self can be a tough lesson to learn but Asher has shown time and time again the be an apt student.

With the light fading and the hour late, three lines of singles had to be abandoned at various stages of play.

Eli Maierson was up 8-7 and 15 all when his match against Said was called.

Vivek Kapur was up 3-2 and 30 all on Joseph C when his match was abandoned.

William Urdahl was just starting when play was called.

Next up, a new iteration of an old rivalry, the Kinkaid Falcons on Wednesday, April 12, at Lee LeClear Tennis Center. Hope to see you there.

Until then, go Mavericks!
