The St. John's Mavericks competed in the Second Baptist Eagle softball tournament March 16-17. The team had two wins and one loss in pool play on Friday. Defeating Scarborough High School 13-0 on two homers by Nora Niebruegge in the first inning. One being a lead-off first pitch shot, and the second one a grand-slam. Melissa Baker picked up the win, throwing a no-hitter over three innings. In the second game, the Mavericks defeated the Pioneers from Lutheran South 10-0 on a one hitter from Melissa. Nora, Danielle and Gabby had two hits each. The team did not fair well in their third game of the day, losing to the Faith West Eagles 6-1. Boo, Nora, VA, and Susan each had one hit apiece. On Saturday morning, the Mavericks returned to the diamond and played the host team Second Baptist. In a close game that was won by the eagles 2-1, there was some outstanding plays made on both offense and defense. Gabby knocked in Boo for the lone run for the Mavericks. Gabby made a great play on defense, and Melissa struck out 6 opponents. In the second game, the team defeated the Lions of Lutheran North 4-2. Dani and VA had two r.b.i.'s each. VA came on in relief of Melissa who was under the weather to get the save. In the final game of the tournament, the Mavericks lost to Faith Christian from Dallas 5-0. Regan had two hits and VA, Boo and Gabby had one hit each. In addition, in her first start since pitching in middle school, VA struck out 5 opponents.
