MAVS TAKE OUT KNIGHTS AT SUNRISE OPENER OF KILT

schambers

Starting with 4 riders in 1952, trail rides have brought attention to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and on Saturday more than 4000 hoofed it east into H-Town. The St. John’s Boys’ Lacrosse team, up before dawn, headed west through Memorial Park on a ride of their own that would end at dusk at the K.I.L.T. (Kinkaid Invitational Lacrosse Tournament)
First to arrive and last to leave, St. John’s would have more on their plate than biscuits and gravy for the opener against their other neighborhood foe, Episcopal. The Knights, on horses of their own, ran circles around the Mavs to take an early 2-0 lead. Once the dust began to settle, however, Scarlet and Black found their game on both sides of the field. William Young hit Patrick Wilkey at 4:58 to make it 1-2 and then Reed Daniel found Zach Gaitz to make it a tie. Daniel scored midway through the 3rd period from a Young assist and the Mavericks took over when John Ytterberg found Jordan Schuler with time running down in the third.
The Knights scored again but the Gaitz-Daniel dual gave the Mavs a two goal lead and Young found Wilkey to finish the scoring the way they started it. Henry Waller had 9 saves when the sun finally came over the trees in Memorial Park giving the Mavericks and 4000 riders a great day to look forward to.
