MAVS GET FINAL SHOT TO PUT DOWN WOODLANDS AND REACH FINAL

schambers

Celebrating a win over Episcopal can last only so long, especially at 900 a.m. in the morning and when the next opponent is The Woodlands. A stout squad, the Highlanders, made the Mavericks look like they only had 3 practices when they squared off at the Mudslinger the previous Saturday. In their first game they cruised by Lamar 12-2 and seemed primed to bring the lumber to the Mavericks once again. If any stray cowboy found his way back into Kinkaid from Buffalo Bayou, he would have tipped his hat to The Woodlands at the beginning of the second period. St. John’s was down 4-1 before they could smell the coffee. If it was not for the return favor of Gaitz to Daniel at the beginning of the second period, and then the reverse combo two minutes later, the Mavs would have been smelling cow chips for the rest of the day.
16 and 22 made it a two goal game and then Patrick Wilkey grabbed the reins with Billy “The Kid” Young to tie the game at 5 with 5:15 left in the third. 7 saves by Henry Waller and a team leading 6 gb’s from John Ytterberg and another 12 from the “Williams” gang (not including injured Edward Williams) set the stage for a final shot. Wilkey dug for a gb behind the crease and fed Jordan Schuler for the game winner as the cowbells rang loud enough to jolt any sleeping dudes back in the saddle. Hats off to the Mavericks!
