It was "sun's out, gun's out" for William Payne on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Scotty Caven Field. Payne scored the first goal of the game and the last in addition to two more and an assist to lead the Mavericks over the Cru of St. Andrew's (Austin) in a SPC counter. Paynes first goal was scored at 10:16 in the first from a Zach Gaitz assist. Patrick Wilkey made it 2-0 Mavs. The Crusaders' Brigham answered back to put SAS on the board, but The Mavericks would put up four more for the half. Reed Daniel assisted Jordan Schuler, Gaitz scored unassisted, William Jewett scored from a Will Wallace feed, and Payne's second goal made it 6-2 St. John's at the half. St. Andrew's got two goals from Schamberg and another from Cowan cut the lead to two, but Payne showed up once more to make it 7-3 Mavericks. Wilkey found Jewett and Payne got to Wilkey to make it 9-4 early in the fourth. Petrick got the Cru's last score and Willy P got SJ to ten for the win. John Ytterberg picked up 9 gb's and Henry Waller had 10 saves on the day.
Notable alumni were in attendance. The Atlas brothers, Ryan '03, and David '04, saw the game and visited with the team afterwards as the Mavs started to prepare for "Rivalry Row" starting with Episcopal on Tuesday night at Scottland Yard.
