Concordia Lutheran Game

The storm seemed to follow the Mavericks out to the area known as Tomball Texas where St. John's took on the Concordia Lutheran Crusaders in the season opener for both teams. The wind howled as the game begin but it did not seem to phase the Mavericks. Wearing their new uniforms St. John's took control of the game and dominated the first half. The Mavericks graciously decided to give the Crusaders the ball first winning the toss and deferring to the second half. St. john's gave up a quick first down to the misdirection oriented Lutheran offense but luckily Jack Waller came to dominate again punishing the Lutheran backs all night long. The Maverick defense held strong and forced an interesting punt. St. John's then took the ball and moved effectively behind the stellar blocking all night from Billy Rogers, John Nutter and tight end Daniel Tweardy. An offsides penalty stalled the Maverick drive and turned the ball over on downs.
Fret not, the Mavericks defense had not left the greater Houston area forcing a 3 and out against the Concordia rushing attack. Unfortunately for the Crusaders the Maverick offense found its rhythm behind the elusive quarterback Joshua Winslow. Jett Williams and Rush Moody's power running attack seemed to be in great combination with the speed of Winslow. Marching easily down the field and facing two short third down conversions Jett Williams found the end zone for the Mavericks for the first time on an 11 yard touchdown run.
In the second quarter of play, St. John's leading by 7 with Jack Griffin tacking on the extra point, the Mavericks did not let up with sophomore standout safety Chris Gow leading the way the defense forced Concordia to punt again. Fortunately for the Crusaders the Maverick offense stalled and Concordia got the ball back. Captain Reed Daniel came up from the corner-back position and laid a hit on the Concordia player knocking the ball loose and Jack Waller scooped it up. Josh Winslow's elusive running style gaining huge chunks of yardage led the Mavericks down the field and senior captain Jett Williams took the ball in form 13 yards out for his second touchdown. Concordia took the ball again and after a NFL quality sack from Caldwell Flores the Crusaders offense was forced to punt. The Maverick defense surrendered only 5 first downs, 75 total yards, 4 punts, and forced 1 turnover for the half going into the locker room with a comfortable 13 point lead but were not done by a long shot.
Josh Winslow led the Maverick offense out of the locker room breaking big runs down the field for 20 and 37 yards. Jett Williams 4 yard rush capped off the drive for his third touchdown on the night giving the Mavs a 19 point lead. Concordia's offense began to open up as the passing attack started to take form. But Jack Waller's speed took over as he chased down and sacked the
Crusader quarterback for a 17 yard loss forcing a three and out.. The quick burst of Rush Moody from the Maverick rushing attack was missing until midway through the third quarter when he broke through the line for a 39 yard touchdown run. The Mavericks converted a two point conversion and led the Crusaders by 27. The
crusader passing attack took form and they marched down the field scoring on an unbelievable catch for a touchdown. But on the kickoff Caldwell Flores took his skill to the next level and answered with an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The St. John's Mavericks had dominated the second and third quarter taking a commanding 33-6 lead.
The Mavericks defense led this time by linebackers William Payne and Stephen Firestone forced another punt but the Maverick offense had limited success after converting two first downs and was forced to punt. Concordia could not get anything going again on offense and was forced to put but took advantage of a mishandled catch and recovered the fumble. The Maverick defense had some sloppy tackling and let the Lutheran running back rush up the middle and scamper 41 yards for a touchdown. The Mavericks second offense took the field with quarterback Gothard Reck at the helm at tailback William Payne in the backfield. The St. John's ground attack was too much for the Crusaders to handle. The Mavericks enjoyed the long bus ride back to River Oaks celebrating a victory something the seniors didn't have much of last year. St. John's pass defense looks forward to the challenge next week of future Texas Longhorn commit Connor Wood. Don't fret though, Go Red, Go Black, Maverick Football is BACK!
