MAVS WIN SEASON OPENER ON BEE-U-TIFUL SKIP LEE FIELD

On a cold and crisp night, the varsity team began a new decade of SJS girls' lacrosse.  A decade ago, Lamar won the state championship by outlasting the then Rebels by two goals on House Park Field in Austin, but tonight the Mavs proved their dominance in this neighborly rivalry, posting a 20-10 win for the first victory of 2010!

It was a very interesting night on the sidelines to say the least, but once the final whistle blew, the overall feeling was, "Wow!  That was a really great way to start the season!"  A good team must overcome challenges, and every player did her part to make the TEAM build confidence and momentum as the game wore on.  It was promising to see the younger players step up and contribute from the get-go, and the veterans show their leadership on the field.

The Mavs were down twice, and the score remained close for most of the first half, as the home team went into the  break up 9-6, thanks to a goal by Lacey with 0:04 left.  After a short but productive halftime, we focused on ball control and what do you know, good things started to happen.  Leading the charge was Lacey with 5G/3A (thanks, Ms. Russell) and Gibson with 3G, 1A (thanks again, Ms. Russell!).  Frankles, Cary, Grace and  Sophomore Sarahs each netted two, while AB notched one of the niftiest goals of the night and "Migraine" Mere shook it off to find the net once.  On the defensive end, Krissy, MA, Sarah D and Kelsey showed their mettle by improving with every onslaught that Lamar offered up.

Lots of potential, lots to work on.  Next up is Playday, with games on Saturday at 9:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 4:30.  GO MAVS!
