Mavericks "Wing It" over Eagles
St. John's defeats St. Thomas for first their South District THSLL win with 6 practices in hand. Wing play was the difference as St. John's doubled their assist tally from their first game vs McNeil.
Senior co-captains Zach Gaitz and Reed Daniel started the scoring for St. John's with an unassisted goal apiece and followed with assists to Jordan Schuler to make it 4-0 in the first quarter.
Maverick momentum was quickly reversed when the Eagles finished the period with two goals of their own.
William Jewett, assisted by Gaitz, scored one of his two goals to get St. John's up 5-2, but St. Thomas found the net thirty seconds later.
The Mavericks finished the half on Daniels' last two goals of the night for a commanding 7-3 lead.
The Eagles returned for three more scores in the third, and St. John's kept finding ways to keep their lead under the lights of Hotze Field.
Schuler scored two more of his five goals on assists from Daniel and Douglas Berkman to make it 9-6.
Berkman fed Jewett for the first goal in the fourth quarter, and with Daniel's two more assists to William Payne and Schuler, the Mavericks finished with a team effort on offense up 12-6.
St. Thomas scored their last goal in the final minute.
