Mavericks Still Trying to Find Their Lucky Number

Sam Chambers
St. John's drops first South District THSLL counter to The Woodlands.
13 has not been St. John's lucky number since Patrick Wilkey wore that jersey last season and helped the Mavericks go to 13-0 in the 2009 regular season. The 2010 Mavs fell to Highland Park last weekend 13-1 and found themselves reeling to the Woodlands on the Highlander's 13-1 run in the second and third quarters last night at Woodlands High School.
The game started out in St. John's favor.  The Mavericks outshot  the Highlanders in the opening quarter and took a 1-0 lead on Caldwell Flores' first goal of the season.
Multiple variables caused St. John's to crumble in the second quarter and sink to 7-2 at the half.
The third period would be all Woodlands again as they put up 7 more unanswered goals to take a 13-2 lead going into the final period.
St. John's saved face in the fourth quarter by going on a run of their own.  Douglas Berkman got his second goal of the night on a Jordan Schuler assist.  Flores found the net for the second time and the offense started to cash in on better ball movement and face off possessions led by John Ytterberg and Reed Daniel.  Zach Gaitz scored the Mavs 5th goal at the 9:17 mark and Reed Daniel and William Payne followed up minutes later with unassisted scores.  Schuler sunk the 9th goal for St. John's with a minute to go, but the clock and unforced errors beat the Mavericks before their lucky number would have a chance to turn up.
St. John's hosts San Antonio St. Mary's Hall on Friday night 7:00 p.m. on Scotty Caven Field.
