Mavericks "Kreuz" Past Falcons

Sam Chambers
St. John's finished the SPC tournament with a win over Kinkaid and a third place finish in the 10 team conference.
Stat of note: The Mavericks picked up 64 gb's on the weekend.

Even though the Mavericks did not make the SPC championship game on Friday’s performance, they had plenty to play for against Kinkaid on Saturday.  It was about pride, a rivalry, and a chance to get better with rain drizzling and pouring down on the Cru’s field in Austin.  It was also a chance to win, follow the smoke to a Texas barbecue institution, and compare Bruce’s regular season pre-game Falcon feast with one of Texas’ best.

St. John’s soaked it all in on day two of the SPC championships and jumped out to a quick lead on Caldwell Flores’ goal with less than a minute into the game.  Blake Upchurch, who had a hat trick on the day, made it 2-0 until Kinkaid’s Sealy scored a minute later.  William Payne made it 3-1, but the Falcons broke down the defense in the slop on a score by Campbell to cut it to 3-2 at the end of 1.

Kinkaid tied it up with a Bailey goal in the 2nd quarter, but Reed Daniel put the Mavs up for good with 2:32 in the half.

After a scoreless third period, Payne got his second goal assisted by Daniel.  Upchurch gave St. John’s a three goal lead with 10 minutes to go, and Bailey scored the last goal for the Falcons with 4:30 remaining followed by Upchurch’s last second score for the trifecta.

Even though it was not for a championship, it was one more win closer to the winner’s bracket from last year.  It was also a chance to celebrate with a plate of ribs, sausage, and brisket, a Texas culinary trifecta at the famed Kreuz Market in Lockhart, Texas, but just shy of Bruce’s best.

The Mavericks face off against the Mustangs of Kingwood on Wednesday for a semi-final berth in the City championship, and a ticket to the super regional for a plate of Texas State Lacrosse.
