MAVS STATE CHAMPS!!!

The third time's the charm or lucky number 7...either way you slice it, the Mavericks had a whale of a weekend in Dallas, culminating in a decisive 12-6 victory over previously unbeaten Cy Fair in the State Championship Game.  This was the third meeting of the teams this season, with the Iron Maidens having their way with the Mavs during the first two.  This was the third championship game the Mavs have been in this season, with the first two ending in disappointing losses.  All that said, the Mavericks' luck changed on Mother's Day, as they walked off the field with their 7th state championship.  This title also makes it seven consecutive years that the Mavs have won SPC, State, or both!

The day dawned cloudy, cool and fresh - a great sign for the team that had played two games on Saturday.  The second pick-me-up came during warm-up, when the team heard a familiar sound:  Bowden Kelly's horn cheerily resonating across the field.  Hats off to Bowden and William Jewett who made the trek to Big D on Sunday morning!
Our luck was cemented when we secured the same bench we had when we last won state on the ESD field in 2007.  Going into the game after a stellar pre-game rap by Coach Warren, the Mavs were feeling good!

Both teams traded goals throughout most of the first half, but the Mavs came out of the gate strong, steady and composed - a good sign of things to come.  Up 7-5 at halftime, the players went into the break determined to keep it going.  The teams again traded goals to open the half, but after that one lone goal by Cy Fair, it was all Mavs, as they scored the final four goals of the game and possessed the ball for most of the second half, sealing the win.

Kudos should start with our defense, who held a very potent Cy Fair attack to just one goal for the final 22 minutes of play.  Kelsey was stellar in goal, stopping shot after shot, scooping up ground balls, and starting the offense with solid clears.  Krissy, MA, Sarah D and Mer were a terrific defensive TEAM that saved their best for last...wow did they play well!  Captain Krissy commanding the D, checking at the right time, scooping up rebounds, playing with ferocity and fire.  MA: gaining possession, racing down the field with confidence, safely delivering the ball to a grateful attack.  Sarah D: turning back several drives to goal, fighting for a late draw possession, coming up with the ball in a crowd of white jerseys and getting a perfect pass off to a teammate as she fell to the ground.  The Mer:  battling a cold but giving every ounce of energy, effort and focus to her team, snatching several draws cleanly out of the air, using her speed to hunt down fast breakers and turn them before they could get to goal.   And how about our freshmen?  Robby and Amanda both stepped up huge to fill the shoes (literally for Amanda) vacated by our ailing and sorely missed AB!  These two hustled non-stop at midfield, close-marking Cy Fair's main threats, and digging deep to gain possessions on numerous draws.  Amanda came up with a key interception on Cy Fair's #1 player that effectively took the last gasp out of their efforts.

Moving on up the field - Sarah Urdahl, scorer of 4 goals, winner of countless draws and groundballs, simply sensational sophomore!  Caroline Gibson - stepping into center with guts and grit, hustling, scoring, doing it all.  Jessica Carroll - a blur up and down the field; never quitting on any groundball, opening up space and playing so smart on attack, assisting on the final goal, never quitting on any attempt to steal the ball back from the Maidens with her lethal check, which she used in the second half at several crucial moments to regain possession for her team.  Cordill, who came on briefly but came on with gusto, determination and speed...making the most of her time on the field to help her team.  And finally to our three attacking captains who showed such poise, leadership and will to win:  Joanie, how inspirational was it to see Joanie sprint back on defense, only to end up close-marking one of their best players, truly doing everything she could to help her team win?!   Frankles: battling, communicating, scoring, possessing, believing!  Finishing our "Ricky" play with a commanding shot that gave her team a huge boost in the first half, then scoring her fourth, the team's final, to put the icing on the cake.  Lacey: setting the tone with the first two Maverick goals, unrelenting hustle and grit, twisting her ankle when she sprinted back on D to thwart a fast break, taping up and coming back to finish out the game for her team.  Our bench: positively passionate, willing their team to win.  To say we couldn't have done it without them is an understatement, as it's because of them that we had fresh-enough legs to finish out our quest for the championship.   Finally, our parents: to the captains' moms & dads for their tireless efforts on the team's behalf;  to the moms who created the wonderful banners, to the incredible cheering section that gave the team such a boost all weekend - THANK YOU!

These girls never cease to amaze.  They are pure fun, pure determination: a true joy to watch when they put it all together.   Our losses at SPC and City only made the victory yesterday more poignant.   Congratulations, ladies!  You have the character and hearts of Champions!  You did it!!!
