Houston Christian Game

The Mavericks put together a complete game showing dominance over the Mustangs of Houston Christian. Winning the toss and electing to receive SJS got the ball on their own 20 after the Mustang kicker put the ball in the endzone. Just getting warmed up the Mavericks went 8 plays to the HC 45 but was forced to punt facing a 4th and 7. Jack Waller did his duty and the Mustangs started their first possession from their own 25. Still warming up and each team sizing each other up the Mustangs found themselves facing a 4th and 2 and deciding to go for it. Then the tone was set for the rest of the game when Jack Waller said nay and stopped the Mustang back for no gain. The Mavericks took over on their own 35 and went 65 yards in 7 plays with Caldwell Flores breaking a run for 23 yards followed by Josh Winslow going 20 yards and Stephen Firestone toting the ball to the 1 to set up Winslows score. Dan Tweardy tacked on the point after and the Mavericks were up 7-0. The next Mustang possession went three and out with the SJS defense forcing a fumble on the first play then Alexander Saucer and Cameron Neal making plays on the next two forced the Mustangs to punt. Starting the second quarter the Mavericks kept the momentum going with a 6 play 51 yard drive again behind the rushing of Flores, Firestone and Winslow. Winslow finished series with a 23 yard run to put the score to 13-0. Tweardy with the kickoff and keeping the tone set for being physical Cameron Neal and Jake Horowitz came up with a big hit on the return. The defense proceeded to get another three and out with Will Wallace stepping in front of a pass for the first of three interceptions for the Mavericks and returning it 42 yards to set up Winslows third score and a SJS 20-0 lead at 5:25 in the second quarter. The Mustangs were able to put an 8 play drive together before half to the SJS 25 but with time running out and facing a 4th and 12 all they could do was try for a field goal to get on the board. Big Walt Baket said nay to that as he knocked the kick down and Chris Gow recovered the ball to send Houston Christian in at the half down 20-0.
The Mavericks picked up where they left off in the start of the second half as the defense took the field first and proceeded to hold the Mustangs to another three and out. After the punt which was fielded by Ben Grifin the offense waisted no time as Caldwell Flores took the first carry 41 yards to the HC 13 yard line. Then on the third play Flores finished the quick drive going in from the 10 and bringing the score to 27-0. Dan Tweardy the put the ball in the endzone on the kickoff for a touchback. Starting from their own 20 the Mustangs tried to put a drive together but Tim Otey said nay to that effort with an interception in which he returned 25 yards to the SJS 45. The offense again waisted no time gettting the ball cross the goal line as Winslow hit Will Wallace on a 50 yard pass play and Tweardy tacked on the extra point for a 34-0 score. Another touchback by Tweardy put the Mustangs agin on their own 20. This time the defense held the Mustangs by forcing a fumble in which Jack Waller recovered. The offense took over to start the fourth quarter with Tweardy leading the attack carrying the ball for a run of 17 yards and 20 yards That set up a five yard score by Winslow and the score to 41-0. With no letting up by the defense with another three and out the Mavaericks took over the ball for their last scoring drive of the night. Gothard Reck in a QB handed the ball off to fullback Nathan Avery who scampered 46 yards showing good speed on the carry crossed the goal line for the final score of the game 48-0. HC tried to come up with a drive on their final possession but senior DB Tim McDugald secured the shutout with an interception in the endzone.
