St. John’s Maverick Girls’ Volleyball team extended their winning streak as they faced the hometown rival Episcopal Knights at home on Tuesday in front of a modest crowd. The Mavs focused on their mental game and getting comfortable with the concept of maintaining a commanding lead throughout an entire game. While allowing the Knights to lead briefly in each game while the score was still in single digits, in all three sets the Mavs seized the advantage early and never looked back. The Mavs defeated the Knights 25-9, 25-8 and 25-11 in straight sets.
With the game in solid control, Coach Fuller was able to rest many of his starters so the whole Maverick team saw game action tonight. Stepping in to deliver sharp defense were Stephanie Guo, Courtenay Buass and Meredith George. Serving was a particular strength tonight with Meryl Gibbs, Angela Ha, Alex Beckham, Kate Bres and Avery Landrum delivering service aces during their rotation. The Mavericks will be training hard during the next two days to prepare for consecutive home SPC counter matches this Friday and Saturday against teams from Austin.
