Maverick Girl’s Volleyball Takes Second Counter Match 3-1

James Fuller

Friday night, the Mavericks racked up another SPC counter win in their match vs. the St. Andrews team from Austin.  The Crusaders put up a good fight and frequently challenged the Mavs’ for the lead with a variety of strong serving and hitting tactics.  The Mavs answered with good fundamentals and ultimately prevailed in the first two sets, taking the first 25-22 and the second set 25-20.  The Crusaders flexed their muscles in game 3 and used some unforced errors by the Mavericks to hold onto a strong lead and handed the Mavs a defeat at 18-25.  That was the wake-up call the Mavs needed and they went on to clean up their game and open up a commanding lead in the 4th game to finish that game 25-11 with their strongest teamwork of the night.  The hallmarks of that 4th set included a strong service rotation by Alex Beckham and some dramatic saves by Meryl Gibbs – though one did manage to get away from her when she crashed through the folding chairs at the Maverick bench.  Jane Labanowski led in total kills with Meryl Gibbs taking second honors in that category.  Angela Ha carried the defense with strong passing.  The Mavericks are back in action Saturday at 11 am with another counter match vs. St. Stephens from Austin.

W 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-11
