Mavericks Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Earns Third Counter Win

James Fuller

On Saturday, the Maverick Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team won their 3rd SPC counter match when they faced St. Stephen’s Episcopal School from Austin.  The Spartans were spirited challengers fresh from a counter win vs. Kinkaid the previous day.  The battle lines were drawn in the first set which remained close with the Mavs ultimately achieving a win 25-20.  The Spartans played tougher during the second set and by taking advantage of some unforced errors, they evened the match with a win 22-25.  Coach Fuller then decided to change up his game plan, and the third set saw a new Maverick line-up and rotation which kept the Spartans guessing on how best to attack.  The points became extended rallies with the ball crossing the net up to 7 times.   The Mavs prevailed in the next two sets to close out the match with a 3-1 finish. The front line was on a killing spree with 4 players in double digits with kills: Alex Beckham led with 12 kills, and Jane and Caroline Labanoski along with Meryl Gibbs earned 11 each.  Service aces were recorded by Angela Ha, Meryl Gibbs and Avery Landrum with two each and one for Alex Beckham. Avery Landrum and Kate Bres each set two games and were integral to the match win.  Meredith George delivered with great serves, digs and passes and Courtenay Buass and Stephanie Guo came up with big momentum-changing plays that kept the Mavericks one step ahead of their opponents.  Angela Ha was solid as libero. There is no question that this win was dependent upon a total team effort and the Mavericks delivered.
